The Faculty Senate SD 14-09 Curriculum and Educational Policy Committee, along with General Education Subcommittee April 28, 2014 For Discussion May 7, 2014 Moved to Action Approved unanimously TO: University Senate FROM: Curriculum and Educational Policy Committee, along with General Education Subcommittee SUBJECT: Approval of Illinois Transfer Courses for General Education The Curriculum and Educational Policy Committee, along with the General Education Subcommittee, requests the Senate’s approval for the following: Background: The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) General Education course descriptions can be found at http://www.itransfer.org/IAI/faculty/Course/CourseDesc.aspx?section=faculty&subsection=cour se&topic=desc. Each category has a list of courses that have designated IAI codes according to disciplines (i.e. Humanities: Foreign Language, History & Civilization, Literature, Philosophy, etc.). There are also IAI codes that are major-specific (i.e. Criminal Justice). For a course to be recognized and approved for an IAI code it has to be reviewed and approved by the IAI committee members from that discipline, just like CTL (Core Transfer Library). The course is given an IAI number and added to the college or university IAI course listing on the IAI website. Any Illinois public university or college can accept that course to meet their General Education requirement for that discipline. There are 7 Gen Ed categories in IL, 6 General Education Core Competencies in IN, and 9 General Education Competencies here at Purdue Calumet. All transfer students in Illinois are required to complete English Comp 1 & 2, Speech, 3 courses in Humanities/Fine Arts (at least one in each category), one Math course, two Science courses (one must be Life Science, the other Physical Science, and at least one must have a lab), and 3 courses in Social and Behavioral Science (must be in at least two disciplines) to earn an Associate of Arts or Science (Science requires two math courses). The total credit hours for Gen Ed is 36-39 hours for these IL Associate degree students. The 7 Illinois Gen Ed categories map closely onto the 6 Indiana Competencies. At PUC the additional Competency in “Knowledge of University and Personal Resources” is met by our First Year Experience courses. Thus, there are in effect three PUC Competencies—Wellness, Technology and Society, and Computer Literacy—that are not covered in the 7 Illinois Gen Ed The Faculty Senate categories. The total credit hours for PUC Gen Ed courses is 30 hours. The table below represents the Gen Ed categories and correspondences in the two states and at PUC: The Faculty Senate Indiana Written Communication Speaking and Listening Quantitative Reasoning Scientific Ways of Knowing Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing Humanistic and Artistic Ways of Knowing Illinois Communication Written and Oral Purdue Calumet Communication Written and Oral Mathematics Problem Solving Skills/Symbolic Reasoning Scientific Principles Life Sciences Physical Sciences Social and Behavioral Sciences Humanities How People Function in Society Arts and Humanities Fine Arts Technology and Society Computer Utilization Skills Wellness University and Personal Resources Proposed: The Illinois general education approval covers the following conditions: 1. In cases wherein students will have completed an Associate’s degree at an accredited Illinois School of higher education before beginning their fulltime enrollment at Purdue University Calumet, we will accept that the student has met the General Education requirements toward a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University Calumet. 2. In cases wherein students will not have completed an Associate’s degree before beginning their fulltime enrollment at Purdue University Calumet, we will accept IAIapproved courses as meeting equivalent discipline General Education course requirement(s) toward a bachelor’s degree from Purdue University Calumet.
