Chapter 1 – Structure of Living Things Lesson 1 – Cells © Brent Coley 2009 | www.mrcoley.com What are plants and animals made of? • All living things are made of cells. • Cells are the building blocks of all living things. What are plants and animals made of? • There are two different kinds of cells: • Plant cells • Animal cells How Can Cells Be Seen? • Cells are very, very small. • A microscope must be used to look at cells. Parts (Organelles) of an Animal Cell • Nucleus: controls what happens in the cell AKA: Control center • Cytoplasm: gel-like material that holds everything together AKA: Packing material Parts (Organelles) of an Animal Cell • vacuole: stores food, water, and wastes AKA: Storage bin • mitochondrion: breaks down food and turns it into energy AKA: Power plant Parts (Organelles) of an Animal Cell • cell membrane: thin layer around the outside of the cell AKA: The fence Parts (Organelles) of a Plant Cell • Plant cells have the same parts as animal cells plus two additional parts. • The vacuole in a plant cell has a slightly different job. Parts (Organelles) of a Plant Cell • vacuole: stores water and gives shape to the cell AKA: Shape keeper • chloroplast: turns energy from sunlight into food AKA: Food factory Parts (Organelles) of a Plant Cell • cell wall: hard outer layer that protects the cell and provides support AKA: The wall Public domain Lego and Styrofoam images courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.
