Israel is not liked by those
neighbors.
• Saddam Hussein was paying $25,000
apiece to the families of Palestinian
suicide bombers.
• Maps printed in Arab countries don’t even
show Israel.
• In 2004, Saudi Arabia got rid of their
official requirement that Jews aren’t
allowed in their country. But they’re still
not welcome.
According to Islam, Jews are “people of
the Book” and are to be treated with
respect. So what’s the problem?
There were minimal problems until the
1900s.
But for decades, Jews and Palestinian
Arabs of Israel have been in conflict.
To understand,
let’s look back in history.

In the 1st century A.D. (C.E.), the
Roman Emperor was tired of Jewish
rebellion in the province of Palestine.
The Roman army destroyed
Jerusalem in 70 A.D. (C.E.).

were taken

as prisoners.
And survivors
fled the area.

Jewish refugees spread throughout
neighboring lands and into Europe.

After they left, other people –
mainly Arabs – gradually moved in.
It became their homeland.

After World War I, Britain had control of
Palestine. Arab Muslims, Arab
Christians, and a few Jews lived there.

many more.

After the war, Jewish refugees
where scattered all over Europe—
and even throughout the world.
Their homes and possessions had
been destroyed, and most did not want
to return to their former cities and
towns where they had been attacked.

250,000 lived in refugee camps, waiting
for a solution. Many pushed for a
Jewish homeland in Palestine.

the Jews a place
of their own.

Tens of thousands
of people were
already living
there, and they
were not asked
their permission.

At the same time, the British military pulled
out. Israel, fearing rebellion, sent troops
into Palestinian towns and cities.

and Iraq responded
by helping
Palestinian Arabs
attack Israel.

In 1967, another war broke out between
Israel and its neighbors (Egypt, Jordan, &
Syria). This war stopped after 6 days (and is
called the Six Day War) when the United
Nations helped with a truce.

After the Six Day War, over 500
Palestinian villages and towns were
destroyed.
In Israel, Arab villages were bulldozed,
citrus groves, lands, and property
seized, and the people were not
allowed to return.

United Nations resolution 242
• Israel was to give up lands taken in Six Day
war.
• Israel and Palestine both had a right to be
independent and live in peace.
The Suez Canal had to be opened up for
international traffic.
• The refugees needed to be treated fairly.

1981-1982: Israel invades Lebanon
On July 17, 1981, Israel bombed the Palestinian Liberation
Organization’s headquarters in West Beirut, killing more
than 300 civilians. In June 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon
with about 60,000 troops in a push to destroy the PLO. The
Christian militia in Lebanon supported Israel’s military. As
part of this support, they attacked refugee camps in
Lebanon and killed hundreds of Palestinian refugees.

1987-1993: The first Palestinian
intifada, or uprising
Palestinians started protesting against Israel’s control
of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip (the only areas
where Palestinians could live). It started with little
things – graffiti, throwing rocks at Israeli tanks, and
setting fire to piles of rubble in the streets. Hundreds of
Palestinians died during this time.
http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2014/08/world/israel-neighbors/
1993 Oslo Accords: Israel agreed to pull
troops out of Gaza and from parts of the
West Bank. The Palestinians would be
allowed to rule themselves under the
Palestinian National Authority.
2000-2005 the second Palestinian intifada
This intifada started after Israel said the
Temple Mount (holy for Jews and Muslims) will
always be under Israel’s control. Palestinians
were already
upset that
Israel still
hadn’t totally
left the Gaza
Strip and the
West Bank.
This was the
last straw.

1,000 Israelis died in those five years.

Who has “the right” to live here? Emotions run high on both
sides. . . .
Both Israelis and Palestinians
claim this land based on history,
culture, and religion.
The Dome of the
Rock is located
in central
Jerusalem. To
Muslims, this
mosque is one
of the three most
sacred sites in
Islam.
Muslims began building the Dome

In Jewish tradition, the temple must
eventually be re-built.
That would mean the Dome of the Rock would
have to be torn down, which is not likely anytime
soon.

security concerns. . . .
Violence has continued between
Palestinians and Jews in Israel.
Palestinians are afraid
of Israeli soldiers. . .
. . .and Israelis are afraid
of Palestinian attacks.
Israel’s latest
solution to
security
concerns is
to build a 25’
high wall to
block in the
Palestinians.
The wall is
cutting into
Palestinian
land.
http://makkah.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/fencemap.gif
After the wall is done, many Palestinian
students and teachers will not be able
to reach their schools on the other side
of the wall.
returning from school across the wall
Getting to clinics, hospitals, and
doctors will be difficult.
This section of the wall divides a street in half.
There’s a lot of hatred of the wall
among Palestinians.
What about their next generations?
This is another situation that
won’t be solved quickly.
