Bibliography. You will be required to read one book from the list handed out in class.

GRADING AND ATTENDANCE
There will be a midterm and a final examination. For these exams you will be
responsible for learning events, terms and key concepts outlined in class and in the
readers. In addition to these two tests, you will be required to turn in one paper on the
work you choose from the Bibliography – three to five pages typed (you will receive a
handout on the specifics of the paper). Any unexcused absence from a test will constitute
a grade of zero for that test and you will not pass the course. “Excused” means that you
have contacted the instructor before missing an exam or class for any reason.
Pasadena City College policy will be followed regarding attendance. “Students
are expected to attend all class meetings of the courses in which they are enrolled.
Students have a responsibility to drop classes they no longer attend. Excessive
absences after the drop or withdrawal deadlines result in the assignment of F grades.”

assignment will determine the amount of extra credit you will receive. ALL EXTRA

that you turn extra credit in as you complete it for feedback. You will receive a separate
handout on types of possible extra credit.

THE COURSE
This course is designed to familiarize the student with the role of women in
American history and how this role relates to their place in today’s society. We will look
at the development of gender roles beginning with the early 1600s. As the course
progresses we will touch on the various types of feminism with the intention of
developing an understanding of women’s position in the educational process. The
literature chosen is varied in order to illustrate the diversity and newness of the field
regarding history and gender.

Written Exercises are due according to the dates on the syllabus. All written exercises
will be in-class and will be on videos and other material from in-class as well as reading
material from the textbooks. These are all open note – some will be short answer and
some will be short essay. You will be informed prior to the written exercise the format.
The questions are all based on material needed to know for the midterm and final. We
will review and discuss your answers in class.
