I think we will need two sessions possibly 3. I would like to offer an overview of the Tool Kit that is applicable to both primary and intermediate versions of the materials. This would allow all the teachers to familiarize themselves with both versions of the materials. If this is not possible – The participants would have to choose to attend the Primary or Intermediate session, but would receive both sets of materials. I am hoping the Scaffolding PD can be incorporated as well. Each session would have approximately 60 teachers/paraprofessional. Please see the chart below. Presentation Times: Please see the chart below. 8:30 – 3:30 1.25 hour lunch 2X 10 minute breaks Please note: Seminar training should be a full 6-hour day. We recommend 8:00am-3:00pm with a 30-60 minute lunch break, mid morning and afternoon breaks. Speaker events are available for full or partial days. Goals & Expectations: What are the most pressing or frequent concerns teachers express about providing adequate literacy instruction in their settings? What are the most pressing needs for our work together? When reviewing topics identified by the elementary campuses as targets for improvement, Balanced Literacy (both primary & intermediate levels), Guided Reading, improved vocabulary & reading comprehension instruction through differentiated instruction were mentioned as campus goals across the district. Additionally 5 elementary campuses have been identified as potentially failing to meet academic standards for AYP in 2013 for LEP Reading. Based on these identified campus needs, the Elementary ESOL Department has purchased the following resources to assist campuses in meeting the literacy needs of their students. We hope to provide professional development in the utilization of the products purchased. 40 Harvey/Primary Comprehension Tool Kits (ISBN: 0-325-00997-X) 40 Harvey (Intermediate) /Comprehension Tool Kits (ISBN: 0-325-00583-4) *20 Harvey/Scaffolding Primary Tool Kit (ISBN: 0-325-02847-8) *20 Harvey/Scaffolding Comprehension Tool Kit ELL (ISBN: 0-325-04284) *I will be ordering additional copies of these products to allow 1 set on each of the 35 campuses. Audience Description & School Demographics: Number of Participants Expected: 75 ESOL ISST teachers, 40 Paraprofessionals, 5 Facilitators and the Instructional Officer for Elementary ESOL The target audience consists of Elementary ESOL Instructional Support Teachers. They are master teachers with at least 3 years classroom experience. They work with the ELLs in the content classroom. They work collaboratively with the grade level teachers in an inclusive model for the planning and delivery of language acquisition and content instruction. We are inviting those Paraprofessionals, who provide in-class support, to attend with their supervising ESOL ISST. Grade Levels/Position of Participants: Elementary ESOL Instructional Support Teachers work with students in Kindergarten through fifth grade. Katy ISD has a “push in” model for language acquisition support. The majority of our teachers work directly with grade level content teachers to support instruction in the classroom. Some work with small groups to provide additional support on as needed bases. What student demographics or characteristics present challenges in relation to literacy instruction? Katy ISD has a very diverse population. This diversity is demonstrated across the district both demographically and economically. The participants will come from all elementary campuses.
