This guide introduces you to the services
available at the Business Library.

The Business Library is located on the top
floor of the Business School on the Jubilee
Campus. Opened in September 2004, the
aim of the Business Library is to support
the teaching, learning and research needs
of both the Business School and the
Institute of Work, Health and
Organisations (I-WHO). However all
members of the University are entitled to
use the Business Library.
subscribes to nearly 4,000 periodicals.
There are almost 100 current periodical
subscriptions within the Business Library,
with many more titles available
electronically. In addition the Library holds
some Business School Masters
dissertations.
1. Opening Times
IS uses the automated library
management system, ALEPH. This includes
a web-based catalogue, UNLOC
http://aleph.nottingham.ac.uk/ALEPH,
which allows online access to details of
books and periodicals across IS. There are
five dedicated UNLOC terminals in the
Business Library. Use UNLOC to locate the
items you need. Make a note of the
classmark (representing a subject area) to
find it on the shelves. For further details,
please consult the full UNLOC guide
(IS2009).

5. Behaviour
The Business Library covers all subjects
taught in the Business School. It aims to
hold at least one copy of all items on
I-WHO reading lists. The multi-disciplinary
nature of I-WHO courses means that
students will also need to access other
libraries within IS. For further details,
please see the full library locations and
opening times guide (IS2004).
Eating, drinking and smoking are not
permitted in the Library. Talking should be
kept to acceptable levels. Mobile phones
should be switched off in the Library.

7. Borrowing a book
Take the book(s) you wish to borrow,
together with your Smart Card, to the
Lending Desk, where a member of staff
will issue the book to you and stamp it
with the due date.
An electronic detection system is in
operation at the Library exit. All books not
issued at the Business Library should be
passed to the Porter on duty.
time students only) or ordinary loan (one
semester/one year for academic staff).
Books marked with green tape are
available for one week loan. Those marked
with orange tape can be borrowed by parttime students only.
These loans are subject to recall should
another borrower wish to reserve an item.
11. Loan entitlements
For further details on borrowing reserving
and renewing items, please consult the full
guide (IS2002).
These are as follows:
Undergraduates

Taught Postgraduates
10 books
- Without your card you will not be able to
borrow or renew items.
PhD/MPhil students

8. Self-issue machine
There is a self-issue machine located near
the Lending Desk. The self-issue machine
increases services available during
reference only hours, and helps reduce
queues at the Lending Desk. Certain items
will still need to be issued via the Lending
Desk staff.
9. Returning a book
Please return all books as soon as possible.
Returned books should be presented at the
Lending Desk. Please wait until the loan
record has been cancelled. Remember that
you are responsible for books issued in
your name whilst the loan record remains
un-cancelled.
The ‘book return’ box outside the Library
may be used to return books. There is also
an inter-site returns service, so you can
return your books at any of the libraries
except the School of Nursing libraries at
Derby and Mansfield, and Shakespeare
Street LRC.
If items are returned late, fines are
charged.
10. Loan Periods

In addition to the above entitlements, two
books may be borrowed from the Short
Loan Collection.
Periodicals may not be taken out of the
Business Library, except by special
arrangement.
12. Short Loan Collection
The Short Loan Collection is located behind
the Lending Desk and consists of books
and periodical articles which are in heavy
demand. To enable maximum use of these
items, they are issued for a 24-hour or
weekend loan period. Items which may be
borrowed from the Short Loan Collection
are marked with blue tape. Some items
are on restricted access and may only be
used within the Library. Heavy fines are
charged for late return. Short loan items
may be reserved in advance.
13. Reference Collection
Certain books are for reference use only
and these are identified by yellow and
green striped tape.
14. Renewals
Items may be renewed by self-service at a
self-issue machine or on UNLOC.

You can also bring the book along with

topped up by using the self-service Kiosk
located near the Lending Desk.
For part-time students we offer the
additional service of telephone renewals
for one week loans. Please call 0115 84
68069. For further details on facilities for
part-time students, please see the full
guide (IS2007).
In the Business Library there are seven
networked PCs offering access to the
World Wide Web, on-line databases, email
services and word processing. You must
register with the University computing
services before using the networked PCs.
15. Reservations
In addition, an Information Services
Computer Resource Area (ISCRA) at the
top of the Djanogly Learning Resource
Centre offers 24-hour Smart Card access
to computing facilities.
Use UNLOC to reserve any items which are
out on loan. Identify the item using the
standard search facility and then select
‘reserve’.
Please note that you need your library
number (found on your Smart Card) and
pin number to make a reservation.
Reserved books normally take at least one
week to be returned to the Library, and
can be collected from the Lending Desk.
You will be notified by email when the
reservation becomes available. You can
also check your own library record via
UNLOC.
16. Recalls
If a book is recalled from you, you must
return it to the Lending Desk by the date
given on the recall notice. Failure to bring
the book back on time means that another
reader is kept waiting and you will be
fined. Fines will be levied for the late
return of books at other times also.
17. Inter-Library Loans
If an item that you require is not in stock,
the inter-library loan system may be used
to obtain material from other libraries. You
can place a request via UNLOC. For further
details please see the full inter-library loan
guide (IS2005).
19. Networked PCs
20. Online business resources
You can access company information and
