Welcome to the Business Library This guide introduces you to the services available at the Business Library. http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/is The Business Library is located on the top floor of the Business School on the Jubilee Campus. Opened in September 2004, the aim of the Business Library is to support the teaching, learning and research needs of both the Business School and the Institute of Work, Health and Organisations (I-WHO). However all members of the University are entitled to use the Business Library. subscribes to nearly 4,000 periodicals. There are almost 100 current periodical subscriptions within the Business Library, with many more titles available electronically. In addition the Library holds some Business School Masters dissertations. 1. Opening Times IS uses the automated library management system, ALEPH. This includes a web-based catalogue, UNLOC http://aleph.nottingham.ac.uk/ALEPH, which allows online access to details of books and periodicals across IS. There are five dedicated UNLOC terminals in the Business Library. Use UNLOC to locate the items you need. Make a note of the classmark (representing a subject area) to find it on the shelves. University of Nottingham Library Online Catalogue (UNLOC) 4. Study places * Note – a self-issue machine is available at this site to use during all library opening hours for books with longer loan periods but not for Short Loan Collection items or journals. There are more than 70 individual study spaces within the Business Library. Network access for laptops is available from 20 of these study spaces. The nearby Djanogly Learning Resource Centre also has over 200 study places and two bookable group study rooms. 2. Stock 5. Behaviour The Business Library covers all subjects taught in the Business School. It aims to hold at least one copy of all items on I-WHO reading lists. The multi-disciplinary nature of I-WHO courses means that students will also need to access other libraries within IS. Talking should be kept to acceptable levels. Mobile phones should be switched off in the Library. Sunday (reference only)* 09.30 – 16.45 In the Business Library, there are approximately 27,000 books, reports and pamphlets. Across the library sites, IS IS2391 February 2005 6. Registration You will need to register with the University before you can borrow a book. You will be issued with a University Smart Card which can be used in all parts of the University system. Borrowing a book Take the book(s) you wish to borrow, together with your Smart Card, to the Lending Desk, where a member of staff will issue the book to you and stamp it with the due date. An electronic detection system is in operation at the Library exit. All books not issued at the Business Library should be passed to the Porter on duty. time students only) or ordinary loan (one semester/one year for academic staff). Books marked with green tape are available for one week loan. Those marked with orange tape can be borrowed by parttime students only. These loans are subject to recall should another borrower wish to reserve an item. 11. Loan entitlements For further details on borrowing reserving and renewing items, please consult the full guide (IS2002). These are as follows: Undergraduates 8 books Please note: Taught Postgraduates 10 books - Without your card you will not be able to borrow or renew items. PhD/MPhil students 15 books Academic staff 30 books - All items are subject to recall if another borrower reserves them. Non-academic staff 8 books External borrowers 6 books 8. Self-issue machine There is a self-issue machine located near the Lending Desk. The self-issue machine increases services available during reference only hours, and helps reduce queues at the Lending Desk. Certain items will still need to be issued via the Lending Desk staff. 9. Returning a book Please return all books as soon as possible. Returned books should be presented at the Lending Desk. Please wait until the loan record has been cancelled. Remember that you are responsible for books issued in your name whilst the loan record remains un-cancelled. The ‘book return’ box outside the Library may be used to return books. There is also an inter-site returns service, so you can return your books at any of the libraries except the School of Nursing libraries at Derby and Mansfield, and Shakespeare Street LRC. If items are returned late, fines are charged. 10. Loan Periods Books in the main collection are available on one week loan, part-time loan (for part- IS2391 February 2005 In addition to the above entitlements, two books may be borrowed from the Short Loan Collection. Periodicals may not be taken out of the Business Library, except by special arrangement. 12. Short Loan Collection The Short Loan Collection is located behind the Lending Desk and consists of books and periodical articles which are in heavy demand. To enable maximum use of these items, they are issued for a 24-hour or weekend loan period. Items which may be borrowed from the Short Loan Collection are marked with blue tape. Some items are on restricted access and may only be used within the Library. Heavy fines are charged for late return. Short loan items may be reserved in advance. 13. Reference Collection Certain books are for reference use only and these are identified by yellow and green striped tape. 14. Renewals Items may be renewed by self-service at a self-issue machine or on UNLOC. Page 2 of 4 You can also bring the book along with your Smart Card to the Lending Desk. In the Business Library there are seven networked PCs offering access to the World Wide Web, on-line databases, email services and word processing. You must register with the University computing services before using the networked PCs. 15. Reservations In addition, an Information Services Computer Resource Area (ISCRA) at the top of the Djanogly Learning Resource Centre offers 24-hour Smart Card access to computing facilities. Use UNLOC to reserve any items which are out on loan. Identify the item using the standard search facility and then select ‘reserve’. Please note that you need your library number (found on your Smart Card) and pin number to make a reservation. Reserved books normally take at least one week to be returned to the Library, and can be collected from the Lending Desk. You will be notified by email when the reservation becomes available. You can also check your own library record via UNLOC. 16. Recalls If a book is recalled from you, you must return it to the Lending Desk by the date given on the recall notice. Failure to bring the book back on time means that another reader is kept waiting and you will be fined. Fines will be levied for the late return of books at other times also. 17. Inter-Library Loans If an item that you require is not in stock, the inter-library loan system may be used to obtain material from other libraries. You can place a request via UNLOC.
