Girl Scouts of the Golden Plains Council
Information needed to complete certain requirements will be located in the
AVIATION RESOURCE PACKET available for checkout at the Girl Scout
Center. (Sorry, I don’t have it!)
Complete 8 activities, including the three that are starred.
1. A preflight check is a checkout of an aircraft before flying to make
sure that it is safe and ready for flight. Learn to perform a complete
preflight check on an airplane. You will need a checklist (Resource
Packet)
*2. Become familiar with the parts of an airplane (Resource Packet)
3. Learn the layout of an airplane control panel by matching the
instruments with their correct name (Resource Packet). Practice by
making a felt board and have a relay game with teams
4. Airports have individual transmissions frequencies just like radio
stations. Discuss your favorite radio station frequencies with your
friends. Demonstrate how to talk to the airport control tower to get
clearance (permission) for ‘takeoff’ and ‘landing’. Find out the Airport
Terminal Information Service (ATS) frequency for your Wichita MidContinent Airport (Resource Packet).
5. A phonetic alphabet is used by radio operators so that they can be
more easily understood through a microphone. Learn the phonetic
alphabet. Then:
 Demonstrate that you now the phonetic alphabet by spelling
your name.
 Write a coded message to a friend.
6. Select ten cities listed in the Aviation Resource Packet and guess the
3-letter airport identifier. For example: Wichita = ICT. Com[are your
list with the one in the packet to see if you have guessed correctly.
7. Time is important when you fly. When you take a long trip, you may
change time zones. In aviation, a 24-hour clock system is used as well
as ZULU time. Using the reference sheets located in the Resource
Packet, learn to tell time with a 24-hour clock. OR Record your daily
schedule by the 24-hour clock. Then discover the following:
 What time is it in New York City, Denver, Los Angeles and
Honolulu when it is 8:00 am CST (Central Standard Time) in
Wichita
 The meaning of ZULU time.
*8. Learn about the dynamics of flight: lift, thrust, weight and drag.
Experiment with each using the activating sheets in the Resource
Packet.
9. Ask a pilot, visit an airport or read a book to discover what the
numbers on the end of a runway mean. The:
 Explain why runways in the same geographic area usually go in
the same direction,
 Design your own airport. Number the runway(s) and name the
buildings.
10. Learn about local aviation industry OR read a story about aviation
history and share what you have learned. Share it with younger Girl
Scouts.
11. Create an aviation game or puzzle (jigsaw, crossword, word search, or
seek and find) based on what you have learned. Share it with younger
Girl Scouts.
12. Build a simple model airplane from a kit; either plastic or wood.
*13. Select a flash card from the “Aviation Bio-Cards” located in the Girl
Scout Library. Read it and share the information with another Girl
Scout.
