Timeline & Duration: 1st quarter—Health Science—first four weeks, Language Arts—vocabulary 3rd day of school and
throughout the first semester; writing activities 4th and 5th week of school.
Unit Summary: Medical Academy tenth grade students will develop a thorough understanding of the interdependence of
body systems and medical terminology through vocabulary, reading, writing, math, science, research and presentation
activities in their Health Science 1 and Language Arts classes.

period. Continue this process until all roots, prefixes, and suffixes and the corresponding words are covered.
Create Vocabulary Concept posters as classroom assignment and to create a word wall

Give students handout with 4 qualities and explanation of elaboration in writing.
Introduce and practice expository writing
Quick writes:
 Write a character sketch from pictures that include at least three vocabulary words and that describes the
person in the picture as potential character in a story.
 Read “The Widow and the Parrot” and write a character description of Mrs. Gage including her handicaps
which will incorporate body systems unit from Health Science.
Writing Assignments
 Write and present a jingle using appropriate medical terminology and containing the house metaphor
assigned in Health Science that explains the body system.
 Write a reflection from the Body System Presentation done in Health Science.
Timed Writing –
 Topic: The importance of one major system to the whole body. Prompt: Explain how one major system of
the body keeps the body healthy and what happens to the body when that system does not work properly.
