League of Women Voters of Santa Monica VOTER November 2010 November VOTER Upcoming Events Our Mission Diversity Policy Election Photos Meet Newly Electeds Desalinization Demo Thanks to Donors SM Leaf Blower Ban Join Our List Election Activities Pros & Cons--Patty and Thea November 2010 The Election Season is almost over. I say almost, because some contests may not be finally decided for another week or two. League members are very happy at the state level with the defeat of Prop. 27 and, locally, with the passage of Y and YY. We want to congratulate all of those who won their contests and thank all of the contestants for their cooperation through various forums, questionnaires and video tapings. Santa Monica is a politically active and involved community, and the demands on candidates are extensive. Win or lose, we hope you remain active in the political process of the community and invite you to join us in our activities during the next year. We also want to thank CityTV and the Center for Governmental Studies for working with us again to assure we have a well informed community regarding local issues and candidates. This is an ongoing partnership which we value greatly. Our next VOTER will be after the winter holidays, but you can update your subscription profile to tell us what kinds of mailings you wish to receive in addition to the monthly newsletter. --Joanne Leavitt, President, LWVSM Report on Election Activities SMMUSD Board Candidates Forum Thea Brodkin reports that LWVSM speakers (Thea, Patty Leach, Joanne Leavitt) made 12 presentations to community organizations. Joanne did voter registration events at SAMOHI and Step Up on Second, and she distributed Easy Voter and L.A. County Voter Info Guides. Forum Timekeepers Barbara Inatsugu worked with CityTV and the Center for Governmental Studies to provide a full schedule of statements by and interviews with candidates for City Council, School Board and Rent Control Board as well as pros and cons on the ballot measures Y and YY. Copies of the schedule were sent home with all elementary students in Santa Monica. LWVSM also conducted a candidates forum for SMMUSD school board candidates at SMMUSD headquarters on October 6. We will need more help next election to get more candidates to participate in Smart Voter. Meet Your Newly Elected Officials Upcoming events...
