COPING WITH STRESS
Managing Stress by following these guidelines.
 Identify your own sources of stress, and examine your methods of
coping.
 Make conscious choices that help control the amount of stress you
experience.
 Develop and use coping and relaxation techniques to diffuse the
tension that builds up excess stress.
 Practice good health habits daily.
PERSONALITY TYPES
Two types of personalities a person may be. Either “A” or “B”
TYPE “A”
 More competitive
 Rushed
 Time Oriented
TYPE “B”
 More flexible
 Less rushed

MOST PEOPLE HAVE CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH TYPE “A”
AND “B” PERSONALITIES.

BY BEING AWARE OF YOUR PERSONALITY TYPE, YOU CAN
ELIMINATE SOME OF YOUR STRESS.
TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS
Time is a major factor in relieving stress.
People who manage their time well are better able to control stress in their
lives.
A person’s ways of effectively arranging his or her time.

Some people have a difficultly managing their lives because they do
not have good time management skills. Part of this comes from not being
able to say “NO” to others.
**
Students in Japan go to school eight hours a day for five days and four
hours on Saturday.

DENIAL
 Refusal to accept reality
 Example: pet has died. Had since a very young age. Refuses to
accept the pet had died. Refuses then to talk about it, and acts as if
still alive.
ESCAPE OR FANTASY
 Running away from a problem through daydreams, books, and
excessive amounts of sleep.
RATIONALIZATION
 Attempt to justify one’s actions with an excuse, rather to admit
one’s failure or mistake
PROJECTION
 Attempt to protect self-esteem by blaming unpleasant feelings or
inappropriate actions on others.
REPRESSION
 Blocking out thoughts about unpleasant things or experiences,
forgetting on purpose. Actually an unconscious method of
escaping something unpleasant.
IDENTIFICATION
 Acting like or modeling one’s behavior after a person one likes. Is
a form of hero worship
DISPLACEMENT
 Expressing feelings toward someone or something not associated
with the source of the feelings.
 Example: person doesn’t get a picked for the team. Later that day
goes home and is greeted by sibling, and that person shoves the
sibling telling them to “leave me alone.”
REGRESSION
 Retreating to an earlier time that seems less threatening and requires
less responsibility.
COMPENSATION
 An attempt to make up for something one did no have, or did not
receive.
SUBLIMINATION
 Transforming unacceptable behaviors into acceptable ones. Can
involve redirecting specific behaviors.
