Required Textbook: New Perspectives Microsoft Office 2010 Second Course. The ISBN number is
9781133162698.
Materials:Computer; Internet (DSL or Cable Modem Recommended); Microsoft Word (2010); Microsoft
Excel (2010); Microsoft Access (2010); and Microsoft PowerPoint(2010).
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students expand computer skills through the use of spreadsheet, database management, word
processing, and presentation software for the integration of information.
COURSE COMPETENCIES:
1.
Describe the benefits of working with integrated software.
2.
Create and edit word processing documents.
3.
Describe what database management systems are and their usefulness in the office.
4.
Create and edit database files.
5.
Use database software to generate reports and create forms.
6.
Describe the concept and uses of spreadsheets in the office.
7.
Create a spreadsheet using basic functions, formulas, and absolute references.
8.
Use spreadsheet software to generate business graphs.
9.
Extract and import a portion of a spreadsheet into a word processing document.
10.
Extract and import data from a database into a word processing document.
11.
Integrate word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software.

CLASS FORMAT:
1.
It is your responsibility to thoroughly read this syllabus as it contains very important information
regarding this online course.
2.
Both SAM software and Microsoft Office 2010 programs will be used in this course to complete
Excel and Access assignments. Depending upon time, we may or may cover Word and
PowerPoint. Your textbook should have come with an access code. If not, you will need to
purchase an access code. Please check the announcement section in Blackboard for more
information. You will need to have your textbook and your SAM account installed for this course
by Tuesday, January 21, 2014. It is important that you have your textbook and SAM installed by
this date in order to complete the homework assignments in a timely manner otherwise you will
quickly fall behind in this 16-week course. If you do not have your textbook and key code by this
date, it would be in your best interest to drop the course.
3.
Keep in mind that if you applied for financial aid late, YOU are RESPONSIBLE for
purchasing your textbooks and key code and keeping up with YOUR assignments in this
class. All assignments, including the first assignment is expected to be submitted on time.
4.
Late submissions of Case Problem Assignments will be accepted with the following penalties
being imposed:
a. Midnight (12:00 a.m.) EST through one day after the due date—Grade will be reduced by
15%.
b. Two days after the due date—Grade will be reduced by 30%.
c. Three days after the due date---A grade of 0% will be recorded.
5.
Late submissions of Review and Internet assignments will not be accepted.
6.
All learners will have the opportunity to submit ONE late Case Problem Assignment without
penalty. It is the student's responsibility to inform the instructor that he/she wants to use the free
late penalty privilege. The late assignment must be submitted within two days of the original due
date or it will not be accepted. Anyone not using the free penalty privilege will NOT receive any
additional credit or advantages. Please use this free penalty privilege wisely.
7. Quizzes will be administered online via SAM. No make-up quizzes will be allowed.
8.
Email me through Blackboard email to receive a quicker response. Use proper English and
correct spelling when emailing me. Do not use “Texting language” such as u, ur, ttyl, brb, etc.
Your emails will be answered within 24-36 hours.
9. You will be tracked by login date and time. To be successful in this course you will need to login
several times a week to remain updated on course postings by your instructor.
10. PowerPoint presentations, web links, and other supplemental materials will be available for each
assignment throughout the course.
11. You must have regular access to a computer with Microsoft Word 2010, Excel 2010, Access 2010,
PowerPoint 2010, and Internet access in order to log on to and complete all assignments for this
course. If you do not have regular access to a computer with Microsoft Word 2010, Excel
2010, Access 2010, PowerPoint 2010, and Internet access this course is not suited for you.
12. It is very important that you do not wait until the due date to start your homework
assignments. Treat this course like your job. Keep in mind that it is YOUR DECISION if you
wait until the due date to start your homework assignments. By waiting until the due date
to start the assignments, YOUR CONSEQUENCES will result in incomplete and/or
unsatisfactory work which will result in a poor grade. You must pace yourself in this
course in order to be successful in this course. Plan accordingly!
13. If you receive grants and/or loans to pay for this class, you should be aware that
withdrawing from or failing this class may affect your future financial aid eligibility. You
should review the Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policy for additional
information. Contact the Financial Aid Office for a copy of the SAP policy. You are
expected to attend class and have the required textbook and software even though you
have not received your financial aid or you may have an appeal in process.

Your final course grade percentage will be based on Case Problems and Exams. Those items are
weighted as follows:

Reading: Students are expected to read the assigned chapter from the text each week and any lecture
notes or other materials that are posted.
WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSE:
Students who find it necessary to withdraw completely from the Bluegrass Community and Technical
College System or from this course should report to his/her academic advisor to initiate Withdrawal
procedures before the last Withdrawal date. Students who cease submitting assigned work without an
official Withdrawal will receive a Failing grade.

Weather or Emergency Closing Information
Inclement weather or other emergencies may cause BCTC classes to be cancelled or delayed. If
