Game Instructions Sampson: A Horse Story (U) 1. Pronoun Work: Review pronouns as words that replace nouns in a sentence. Separate the pronoun and sentence cards and place them face down on the desk. Have the student select a pronoun card and a sentence card. If the pronoun can be used correctly in the sentence, the student keeps the set. Take turns and the one with the most matches when all the cards are finished wins the game. Mike’s Good Bad Day (I) Game Instructions 1. Vocabulary Game: Match the vocabulary word to the correct definition. Use the new vocabulary word in a sentence orally. 2. Finding Present and Past Tense Verbs: Separate the cards into two piles – present tense and past tense. Place the past tense cards face up in rows. Using the pile of present tense verbs face down in a pile, turn one present tense card over at a time and match it to the past tense verb. Have the child tell what letters were added (-ed or –ied). Have the student use each past tense verb in a sentence. Example: hurry – hurried The old man hurried home before the storm arrived. 1. Contraction Action: Match the contraction with the correct two words. Play it as a memory game. Put all the 2 word cards in a pile turned down. Put the contraction cards in rows face down. Take turns drawing from the 2 word card pile. Turn over a contraction and see if it matches. If it does, the person picks it up, if not turn over the contraction and leave it in the same spot. Have the student try to remember where each is located. The person with the most matches wins! 2. Vocabulary Match: Match the vocabulary word to the correct definition. Use the new vocabulary word in a sentence orally. 3. Using the game board and question cards, spread the question cards face down on the table and have the student select a card. Read the card with the student. If he/she answers correctly, move along the game board the number of spaces indicated on the card. If incorrect, place the card on the bottom of the pile. Continue drawing until one of you reaches home. 2. Contraction Cards: Place all the contraction cards face up on the table. Have the student match the contraction with the two words that make up the contraction. 3. Question Cards: Spread the question cards face down. Take turns drawing a card. Read the question to the student or vise versa, if the student answers the question correctly, move along the game board the number of space indicated. Continue until some one reaches the end of the game board. That person is the winner. Lance and His Bicycle (K) Games to Play 1. Using the sequencing game words (first, then, soon, last, next, finally), place them face down on the table. Each person picks two cards. Then, using the Lance’s Racing Time Line on page 15, make up appropriate sentences based on the selected sequencing cards. Continue until all cards are used. 2. Vocabulary Match: Have the student lay out the vocabulary cards and read each word. Turn the definition cards face down in a pile. Take turns reading the definitions and finding the match. Additional work: Have the student choose 5 of the vocabulary words and use them in sentences. Remember to use correct capitalization and punctuation. 3. Questions and Answers: Shuffle the Question/Answer cards and place them face down between the players. Take turns choosing a card and asking a question. If the person gets the right answer, they get to move the indicated number of spaces on the game board. The first one to get home wins! 4. Vocabulary Game: Match the vocabulary word to the correct definition. Separate the word cards and the definition cards and spread them out on the table. Have the student draw a word card first and then try and match it to a definition card. If the cards are correct, they keep the match. If not, turn them back over and try again. Discovering Dinosaurs (I) Game Instructions Concentration with Plurals Match: Before beginning this game, review the regular and irregular plurals used in the story. Place all the cards face up and match the words. Have the student put his/her finger under the letters that are different (dinosaur/dinosaurs tooth/teeth). Then, use the cards to play concentration until all of the sets are collected. 5. Question Cards: Spread the question cards face down. Take turns drawing a card. Read the question to the student or vise versa, if the student answers the question correctly, move along the game board the number of space indicated.
