Library Services and Resources
Don’t be misled by the small size of Shorter’s three branch
libraries. Within each PC towers a three- to four-story library of
full-text journal articles and books. This library is known as
Galileo. An acronym for Georgia Library Learning Online,
Galileo makes available thousands of full-text journal articles and books through
approximately 300 different databases. Unlike search engines or guides to World Wide
Web sites, Galileo provides access to quality published material that has previously
appeared in magazines, professional and trade journals, and books. The Galileo URL is
http://www.galileo.usg.edu. The password changes quarterly, and is posted on your
S.C.H.O.L.A.R. portal home page at https://scholar.shorter.edu/ics.
GALILEO
Personalized research consultation is encouraged at the Shorter
University Libraries. Librarians have the time and the enthusiasm
to meet with each individual student to plan research strategies
that meet his or her unique requirements. Written materials, in
both print and electronic format, can explain basic library procedures or serve as reminders
of lessons learned in class presentations or research consultations. Handouts on many
topics are available at all libraries. The Library Web Site provides general information
about the libraries, such as the names of staff members and their contact information and
library hours. It also provides access to research resources, such as course guides,
DANTES study guides, links to individual databases and to Galileo, instructions for finding
books and journal articles, subject-specific resources, and more. The Library Web Site is
located at http://www.shorter.edu/libraries/libraries_home.htm.
Consultation, Web
& Handouts
The range of materials available to off-campus students is not
limited to the holdings of the North Atlanta, Gwinnett, and
Riverdale branch libraries. Items may be borrowed from the
Livingston Library in Rome—which contains over 150,000
books, periodicals, recordings, electronic documents, and other items—by arranging an
intercampus loan. Materials will usually arrive from the main library or another branch
within the week.
Intercampus &
Interlibrary Loans
Books and other items not owned by any of the Shorter University libraries can be obtained
through interlibrary loan. Before requesting an interlibrary loan, please do the following: (1)
search Shorter’s online book catalog at http://www.youseemore.com/shorter/ to make sure
that the item is not available at any of the Shorter College libraries; (2) check for the item at
your local public library; and (3) see if it is available at Kennesaw State or at Gwinnett Tech
(see below). To request an intercampus or interlibrary loan, please complete the
appropriate Web request form located on the library home page. Please note that the
loan process often takes several weeks.

Currently enrolled students may, upon presentation of a
current student identification card, borrow up to five items
from the libraries at Kennesaw State University and
Gwinnett Technical Institute. Librarians at these institutions
allow Shorter students to use their libraries out of the goodness of their hearts, so please
take every opportunity to thank them profusely.
Borrowing Privileges
at Other Libraries
Reference librarians are, primarily, teachers of information
literacy. They attempt to develop students’ understanding of
how recorded knowledge is organized and structured so that
they may become self-directed, lifelong learners in the liberal arts tradition. They do so by
instructing students in the use of specific sources, by introducing them to the literature of a
certain discipline, by suggesting search strategies, through individual or group consultation,
and by many other means.
Reference Librarians
The function of reference librarians can be compared to that of the AAA. They can provide
you with maps and suggest alternate routes to your destination, and can redirect you if you
should take a wrong turn. But while they can be guides on the information superhighway,
they can’t be chauffeurs; the traveler still bears ultimate responsibility for the trip.
Please feel free to contact a member of the Shorter library faculty; we genuinely look
forward to assisting you with your research. Below is the contact information for the OffCampus Librarian, the Library Liaisons, and the Rome campus library.
