Digital Pipeline
Alaska’s conduit for information
from articles and selected reference sources
 The Digital Pipeline provides a wealth of information about health, business, current events, and
other topics essential to Alaskans for their personal, work, and education needs.
 Provides Alaskans with online access to complete articles from more than 10,000 magazines and
100 newspapers, transcripts from thousands of TV and radio broadcasts, book reviews,
photographs, maps, and dozens of books and reference sources.
 At an annual cost of 82 cents for every Alaskan, the Digital Pipeline is an information dividend that
really pays off!
 A cost-effective project: since February 1999, Alaskans have found 5.2 million complete articles information not available in most of our schools and libraries. The same number of articles would
have cost Alaskan libraries $52 million to request for their patrons.
 Narrows the digital divide between rural and urban Alaskans by providing the same information at
the same time and at the same cost to both rural and urban Alaskans.
 The Digital Pipeline provides resources that cannot be found for free on the Internet.
 Selected to meet the broad range of information needs of Alaskans from kindergarten through
graduate school.
 Available over the Internet 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all Alaskan residents.
 Available to Internet users whose computer addresses are located in Alaska; computer users
outside Alaska cannot access the databases.
 The Digital Pipeline databases were selected by a statewide advisory group of librarians following a
public, statewide trial in which more than 600 comments and evaluations were received. A
statewide coordinating committee of librarians continues to manage this service.
 A joint project of the University of Alaska and the Alaska State Library, with funding from the Alaska
State Legislature.
 Available to Alaskan libraries, schools, and residents at home: http://sled.alaska.edu/databases
 If prompted for an ID and password, call 1-800-440-2919 within the State of Alaska.
