Sir Robert Borden High School Mathematics and Computer Studies Department 2008-2009 Department Guidelines for Late/Missed Evaluations Rationale Student marks should reflect achievement of the course expectations. Teachers design evaluations (tests, assignments etc.) in order to measure achievement of expectations, so completion of these tasks is essential for grading. Furthermore, task completion is an important life skill and learning strategy. Students must assume responsibility for their school work. Teachers will work with students and parents to create a culture of responsibility. Students are expected to complete/submit evaluations on time. Students who miss in class evaluations (like tests) or assignment deadlines due to illness or other reasons must follow the procedures listed below: In-class Evaluation (e.g. test, quiz, presentation, performance assessment, etc.) If you know in advance that you are going to be absent for an evaluation: 1. Submit a written request (using the “Missed Evaluation Form”) before the evaluation day. 2. Arrange an alternate time/day for the evaluation with the teacher. 3. Provide written 3rd party verification of the absence (parent note, e-mail, or voicemail 829-5812) If you are ill or there is an emergency on the day of an in-class evaluation, 1. Notify your teacher via email or voice mail (829-5812) 2. Contact your teacher immediately upon your return to school, make arrangements with your teacher and complete a “Missed Evaluation Form”. 3. Provide written 3rd party verification indicating the reason for your absence. Depending on the reason for the absence, one of the following will apply: • • An evaluation (original or replacement) will be given at a time determined by the teacher. Note that students must be prepared to complete this evaluation immediately upon their return to school (even if it is the same day). An incomplete may be considered if expectations will be covered through other evaluations. Other Evaluation (e.g. assignment, project) Assignments are to be submitted at the beginning of class on the due date. Students should expect consequences for late or missed assignments. If an assignment deadline is missed, students must fill in a “Missed Evaluation Form”, and depending on the circumstances, one of the following will apply: • • • • Students may be expected to complete the assignment at lunch, before or after school An extension may be granted A replacement evaluation may be given An incomplete may be considered if expectations will be covered through other evaluations. Marking of Late or Replacement Evaluations Students must note that it may not be possible to design and mark a replacement evaluation prior to mark due dates, so report card marks may not reflect completion of these evaluations. In this case, teachers will use other evidence and their professional judgment to estimate the degree to which students have achieved expectations. Note: It must be recognized that designing and marking replacement assignments and tests is a time consuming task for the teachers. Furthermore student learning is affected by the delay of constructive feedback, and by missing foundational knowledge / concepts required for further class work and subsequent assignments. In order to be fair to those students who submit work on time, alternate evaluations may be more open ended or require more independent work then original evaluations. Furthermore, teachers may not have time to provide the same level of individual feedback. Students who are habitually late with assignments or who miss other evaluations without proper justification may at some point, due to the realistic constraints of time, forfeit the opportunity for alternate evaluation. In this case, it may be determined that no evidence of learning has been submitted, and this will be reflected in the student’s grade.
