Philosophy for Children Level 1 The lead facilitator for the professional development is Associate Professor Philip Cam, who will be assisted by qualified P4C teacher educators. This will be followed by a dinner with a guest speaker Dr Jacqueline Lo Head of the School of Humanities, Faculty of Arts at the ANU This course will give teachers the Level 1 qualification in Philosophy for Children, an approach that is internationally recognized. This is an internationally utilized program for developing the entire range of reasoning skills in young people from Pre School through to year 12. Who is it for? Teachers, classroom assistants, curriculum leaders, advisors, managers and lecturers have all found this course helpful in their work. These workshops are also suitable for those wishing to make a start in the classroom, also suitable as a refresher for those already trained. The Training Package Available SOPHY Level One Certification (recognised by the Federation of Australasian Philosophy for Children Associations - FAPSA)) requires completion of three days of professional development, followed by five documented sessions in the classroom, plus observation and feedback by two experienced practitioners. Hope Building The Australian National University Canberra ACT 0200 Australia Associate Professor Dr Phillip Cam is from the UNSW, and is well known both in Australia and overseas, for his work in Philosophy for Children. In recent years, he has held seminars and conducted training programs in Australia, New Zealand, the U.S.A., England, Mexico, Russia, Singapore and Latvia. He has also involved, through UNESCO, with promoting democracy through philosophy education in the Asia-Pacific region. In addition to his academic publications, Philip has written and edited books for children and teachers, a number of which have been translated into German, Spanish, Russian and Latvian. Essential for Level One Certification. The workshop is designed to equip you to begin philosophical inquiry in the classroom. Participants who wish to may gain a certificate as a P4C facilitator, which is recognised throughout Australasia. (Note that attendance at these workshops alone does not meet the Federation of Australasian Philosophy in Schools Association standards for Level One Certification. FAPSA requires a minimum of 12 - 18 hours of training) a need to conduct and document 5 sessions with a class, a self assessment task and undergo an observation and feedback process with an experienced facilitator. An evaluation checklist will be available for those wishing to do the level 1. The fee for observation is $100. Cost $190 a day (Includes, morning and afternoon teas, and a $10 levy paid to FAPSA) Friday evening Dinner and Speaker $60 Level 2 (Train the Trainer Course) Expressions of Interest Criteria put together by Dr Laurance Splitter in 1998 for Level 2 1. The FAPSA Teacher Educator Certificate is a formal qualification to run teacher training, courses. This award is based on philosophical academic background, teaching experience, performance at the workshop and a self-assessment task 2. The FAPSA Philosophy Teacher Educator Certificate qualifies the holder to run teacher-training courses in conjunction with a Classroom Practice Teacher Educator. This is awarded to people who meets the requirements for teacher education with respect to philosophy but not (yet) classroom teaching (e.g. a qualified philosopher with limited classroom experience and expertise) obtains certification to this effect, thereby certifying them to conduct level 1 training, in conjunction with someone who has obtained certification as a teacher educator with respect to classroom teaching. 3. The FAPSA Classroom Practice Teacher Educator Certificate, certifies a person to run teacher training, courses in conjunction with a Philosophy Teacher Educator. A person who meets the requirements for teacher education with respect to classroom teaching but not (yet) philosophy (e.g. a teacher with several years of experience in philosophy for children, but will little or no formal philosophical background) obtains certification to this effect, thereby certifying them to conduct level 1 training, in conjunction with someone who has obtained certification as a teacher educator with respect to philosophy. 4. The FAPSA Certificate of Attendance is awarded to a person who does not meet either set of requirements obtains a "certificate of attendance." Requirements for Certification by FAPCA as a Philosophy for Children Teacher Educator Certificate of Attendance Requirements: Completion of the workshop Philosophy for Children Teacher Educator Certificate – Classroom Practitioner Requirements: Completion of the workshop At least 50 classroom P4C sessions completed Has encountered and successfully dealt with common difficulties in setting up and developing a community of inquiry Demonstrates a commitment to reflective practice and continuing self evaluation Philosophy for Children Teacher Educator Certificate – Philosopher Requirements: Completion of the workshop Minimum of four years tertiary Philosophy study Has a sound understanding of the community of inquiry Demonstrates a commitment to reflective practice and continuing self evaluation Philosophy for Children Teacher Educator Full Certificate Requirements: Both the Classroom Practitioner and Philosopher Certificate requirements Level Two is designed for Level One people who would like to train as trainers. PREREQUISITES: Participants must have successfully completed: • Level One training • a Teaching degree • substantial practice teaching philosophy in the classroom (at least one year) • the equivalent of a sub major in Philosophy. We also request that a letter of recommendation from a FAPSA associate be submitted.
