The June 17th meeting will be our last meeting before the summer recess, and we will convene again in September. Please join us to wrap up what has been a great year of unprecedented attendance and speakers for the Orange County Chapter. We are pleased to present Majid Safaie, Esq., CPM who will present on the topic of Contractual Best Practices, with his unique take on the subject of “Why?” You will really enjoy his engaging nature! I would also like to thank all of our members who were able to attend our joint meeting last month with the National Property Management Association, Saddleback Chapter. We were very happy to have a number of their members in attendance, and we look forward to future collaboration between our organizations. NPMA even provided the guest speaker, Skip Adolph, who gave us all some valuable insight into Property Management System Assessments based on his extensive experience in the area. We also invited students and members affiliated with the local Colleges and Universities to the May meeting and we were particularly honored to have Jonathan Modrigal, incoming Cal Poly Chapter President join us! We had record attendance in May, also welcoming several new guests: S. Lee, V. Glaeser, J. Malone and I. Shimizu Jr. This month we will also confirm our new Board members, so please join us to welcome them! -Derek Hahn, President, OC NCMA Topic: Contractual Best Practices “Why?" The article features (4) students, one being Jaclyn Zandieh, who recently completed the Contract Management Program. Jaclyn was a Summer Intern under Ed while assigned to Los Angeles County Metro. Congratulations to Jaclyn on your new position at Northrup and kudos to Ed for his dedication in mentoring future CM’s! Employment Update Unemployment shows a slight drop locally. Even though there is a slight drop there are still a lot of people that are unemployed and in need of jobs. The unemployment rate fluctuates, depending on the area in which you live. The rate still reflects 11.412.2 % unemployment. The government reports 4,666,000 people filed continuing unemployment claims in the week ending May 22, 2010. That figure is up 31,000 from the preceding week. California claims fell 1,206 for that period. Despite minimal movement in the market, you are reminded to: constantly network, use ingenuity and check both the National NCMA Website and the OC Chapter Website for opportunities. Also check those of our sister chapters: Beach Cities, Riverside, San Diego and Los Angeles. Remember: Job hunting is a full time job and your efforts will be rewarded! BRANDMAN UNIVERSITY (FORMERLY KNOWN AS CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY) The Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) exam prep course is offered three times a year through the university. Fall session begins October 2nd. It’s a higher level certification within the APICS hierarchy that, in their own words, “takes a broad view of the field, extending beyond internal operations to encompass the entire supply chain—from the supplier, through the company, to the end consumer.” It has experiential and/or educational requirements that the CPIM designation does not. The course is taught by an energetic Jimmy Zepeda (an official with APICS). For more information, click here. The university also offers an Advanced Career Strategies course designed to help you take control of your own career. It’s valid for everyone, in transition or in anticipation of transition, who wants to master the art of the job hunt. It’s facilitated by John Hall, a life-long career placement professional. For more information, click here. NCMA CERTIFICATION INFORMATION NCMA has reduced the complexity of its premier certification program while retaining the stature of the credentials. The biggest change is the implementation of having only one exam per certification. Another major change pertains to the general business requirements removed from the CFCM and CCCM. The CPCM, CFCM, and CCCM are certifications awarded to candidates who meet rigorous standards, including experience, education, training, and knowledge. The NCMA professional certification program is designed to elevate professional standards, enhance individual performance, and distinguish those who demonstrate knowledge essential to the practice of contract management. For more information see: http://www.ncmahq.org/GetCertified. Note that at the 2009 NCMA World Congress Conference it was announced that the CMBOK (Contract Management Body of Knowledge) would be reviewed and revised. Expect CMBOK v.3 to be rolled out in 2010. In addition, it is expected that certification exams will be revised in order to conform. Visit NCMA’s home site for more information about certification: http://www.ncmahq.org/Learn. If interested in leading or attending a future study group for certification, please contact Chris Arnold at 949-553-0688, x 241 or Matt Plaxton 949 (331) 8500. Call for Applications: 2010-2011 NCMA Contract Management Leadership Development Program (CMLDP) - Applications are now being accepted for admission to the 20102011 NCMA Contract Management Leadership Development Program (CMLDP). This program is designed to help develop the next generation of contract management leaders through an intensive year-long educational experience. Program participants will receive 180 hours of top-quality training in fundamental leadership, NCMA governance, and contract management. This program is relevant to all contract management professionals, regardless of their employer, location, or industry. This highly regarded program was created because the members of the current contract management workforce are retiring faster than the next generation can replace them. This has created a gap in supervisory, middle management, and executive-level positions across the entire profession. The CMLDP is designed to accelerate the preparation of a select group of contract management leaders, helping to close the gap in leadership progression. CMLDP students are guaranteed to receive top-quality training in the essential skills of the contract management field. CMLDP graduates will carry with them a unique, meaningful credential that will open doors to new challenges and professional opportunities. Find out more about the CMLDP and how it can benefit both your future and the future of the entire contract management profession. To apply, simply complete the application form and submit it to NCMA at ldp@ncmahq.org no later than 11:59 PM ET, June 30, 2010. As an NCMA member, you have already met one of the application requirements for the CMLDP. Include letters demonstrating support from your employer and your local NCMA chapter. Selections will be made by August 31, 2010, and the program will officially begin October 6, 2010. The 2010-2011 Curriculum Summary is posted online for those with scheduling concerns. Please address any questions you may have to John Wilkinson, CPCM, Fellow, Program Manager, at wilkinson@ncmqhq.org or ldp@ncmahq.org. Remember, the application deadline is 11:59 PM ET, June 30, 2010! Please be sure to forward this e-mail to any of your NCMA colleagues who will benefit from this opportunity.
