1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division

The Coordinator or Manager, Systems (RSJ) reports to the Dean of the Reynolds School of
Journalism (RSJ) and is responsible for the School’s technology systems and management of its
computer labs.
Range 2 - Coordinator:
The Coordinator works with students, faculty and other internal and external constituencies to direct
the smooth operation of the technology tools that support the course work and independent research
of the undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. The position manages and ensures
appropriate use of the RSJ computer labs. The individual trains and supervises students and student
workers in proper use and oversight of the lab. The Coordinator works with the University of Nevada,
Reno Information Technology (IT) community to troubleshoot problems and update software and
hardware as necessary.
Range 3 –Manager (in addition to Range 2 above):
The position manages the research, planning, specification, purchase, installation and maintenance of
information technology hardware and software including lab computers, media editing facilities, and
file servers. The Manager collaborates with faculty to build curriculum around technology and provides
streaming video (storage and retrieval) assistance and recommendations for digital media projects.
The Manager acts as a liaison to the IT community and outside vendors.

40% - Computer Hardware, Software, and Multimedia Equipment Management
 Manage the inventory and check-out of equipment throughout the RSJ
 Manage the maintenance of equipment and upgrades of hardware and software throughout
the classrooms, labs, and offices of the RSJ
 Maintain currency with the University’s IT efforts allowing for the integration of software,
hardware and programming enhancements
 Ensure compatibility, compliance and security of hardware and software within the School
 Coordinate the research, planning, specification, purchase, installation and maintenance of
information technology hardware and software, including lab computers, media editing
facilities, and file servers
 Serve as a liaison to troubleshoot networking issues
 Conduct basic server administration with the support and assistance of IT
 Monitor network and server systems, communicate problems to IT, request assistance as
needed

 Hire and supervise student lab assistants to operate the School’s computer labs
 Schedule and maintain lab assistant coverage for the labs during business hours and during
nights and weekends as required

 Serve as a liaison with IT to develop recommendations on the purchase of hardware and
software within RSJ (including cost, compliance, compatibility and security factors)

10% - Technology Research
 Research and recommend new equipment and upgrades of hardware and software throughout

 Troubleshoot network issues

 Work with faculty/staff to determine the requirements for a given application to be hosted on a
server

 Document problems, conduct research, consult with IT and develop solutions
 Provide assistance in the design and production of digital media projects related to storage
and retrieval optimization; develop and execute back-up strategies for data pool

3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.

Range 2 - Coordinator:
The Coordinator works closely with IT to resolve server and network issues and conducts research on
the increasingly technical disciplines of news and strategic communication. The incumbent works
autonomously to ensure that faculty, staff and lab computers are functioning properly and to resolve
issues. Decisions are made in defining policies and procedures for lab operation, staffing student lab
employees, and in problem solving. The incumbent collaborates closely with faculty to support the
process of building curriculum around technology. Decisions on purchases and policies are reviewed
with the Dean and the RSJ Technology Committee.
Range 3 –Manager (in addition to Range 2 above):
The Manager, Systems must work independently from a technical standpoint with limited assistance
from IT. Decisions are made in problem solving, developing recommendations and ensuring
continuous systems operations. Initiative is required to anticipate issues and research appropriate
new and emerging technologies. Ongoing problems, system performance issues, and long-range
concerns are brought to the attention of the Dean and the RSJ Technology Committee.
Impact:
Range 2 - Coordinator:
The RSJ provides education and conducts research on increasingly technical disciplines including
broadcasting, graphic design, videography, advertising and public relations. The Coordinator
provides essential computing services to RSJ in support of these disciplines. Poor performance
negatively impacts the ability of students and faculty to utilize RSJ facilities and successfully complete
projects. Failure to meet goals could negatively impact the reputation of the RSJ and its faculty and
students.
Range 3 –Manager (in addition to Range 2 above):
A systems outage is immediately noticed and impacts RSJ’s ability to conduct research, educate
students and handle business operations. Decisions leading to excellent service contribute to
teaching and learning and promote student/faculty success and retention.
