Pastoral Support Assistant
GRADE
F19 – 22
HOURS OF WORK
35 hours per week, 39 weeks per year

This appointment is in accordance with the Employment Protection (Consolidation) Act 1978. The Governors of St
Augustine’s Catholic College undertake to ensure that any future changes in the terms will be entered in this
document or otherwise recorded for reference within one month of the change.
As a member of St Augustine’s Catholic College, you are expected to contribute to the Catholic ethos.
Main Duties
Support HOP/HOY with pastoral care of students: including dealing with behaviour issues as and when they arise.
This comprises of meeting with the students to determine the nature of an incident in order to provide appropriate
support. Follow up work includes liaising with tutors, meeting with parents to discuss ways forward depending on
nature of the incident, and signposting to external agencies.
Designated Deputy Child Protection Officer: work alongside and deputise for CPO. To identify CP cases and to
refer to Social Care: attend strategy meetings, initial child protection conferences, core groups for child in need and
child protection cases. To support students who fall into these categories and to inform appropriate staff on a need
to know basis.
Common assessment forms (CAF): For students who require multi agency support but who do not reach Social
Care thresholds, a CAF is required to share information and provide the best possible support network around the
young person. Continuous follow up work is required through A Team around the Child (TAC) meeting which
provides a forum for discussion and allows for a review of the situation.
Single Assessment Referral Form (SARF): For students who require a single agency support but who do not reach
Social Care thresholds, a SARF is required.
Referring to external agencies: where more specific, professional support is required referrals are made to external
agencies such as CAHMS, SPLITZ, Young Carers, YIP, Mermaids, Police, Educational Welfare Officer.
Counselling services: overseeing the referral to the school counsellors and managing the waiting list.
Behaviour and Attendance Group: attending meetings with HOP to work with the West Wilts Alliance group of
schools to develop strategies that will encourage consistency and standardised practice.
NISAI: being the point of contact for the online provider for home education for student with medical issues.
Medical PEPs: conducting medical personal educational plans with/without the HOP to put together an appropriate
package for students with medical needs.
Attendance: working alongside the HOP/HOY to deal with attendance issues. Conducting School Attendance
Meetings with parents, recording minutes and sending on, if required, to Educational Welfare Officer, attending
Local Authority Attendance Meetings. Meeting regularly with the EWO.
Well-being data: collating information regarding the well-being of students and passing on for data storage.
Submitting safe-guarding audit to County annually.
Inclusion: to support HOY in: informing parents if students are in inclusion, support with break and lunchtime
supervision, ensure students have work from class.
Exclusion: to support HOY in providing work for the student to complete at home and to support as necessary with
re-integration meetings on the day of return.
Additional Tasks




Maintain good lines of communication and to co-operate with all other disciplines in the college
Ensure that all college policies are adhered to at all times, and in particular Health and Safety Policy,
Emergency Procedures, absence from School and in relation to specific responsibilities associated with the
job description
Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of students at the College
The co-ordination and daily management of the Inclusion system
Links with other Agencies

Liaises with other professionals eg school nurse, social care, CAMH, health visitors, GPs, police etc
Knowledge and Skills
The post holder must have the ability to undertake a range of tasks involving the application of procedures; a good
standard of practical knowledge and skills in pastoral care and a good range of administrative skills including word
processing and spreadsheets.
General
The post holder may be required to perform duties other than those given in the job description for the post. The
particular duties and responsibilities attached to posts may vary from time to time without changing the general
character of the duties or the level of responsibilities entailed. Such variations are a common occurrence and would
not themselves justify the re-evaluation of the post. In cases, however, where a permanent and substantial change
in duties and responsibilities of the post occurs, consistent with a higher level of responsibility, then the post would
be eligible for re-evaluation.
