Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! This week in Reading, students were read the story “The Dinosaur Who Lived in My Backyard.” Students had to use their comprehension skills to answer questions about a child who imagined what it was like to have a dinosaur living in his backyard. During our Reading lessons, students were also introduced to the letter D/d. Students learned how to recognize, write, and identify the uppercase “D” and the lower case “d.” In class, students also had to identify words that start with the letter D/d by stating “Dazzling Dance (item).” In Writing, students learned about dinosaurs! This week, the students were read several stories about the topic dinosaurs. Next, the class had to help create a list of facts about dinosaurs on the front board. In the middle of the week, as a class, students stated sentences about dinosaurs as Mrs. Basham wrote the sentences in correct form on the front board. Later in the week, students had to draw a picture of a dinosaur and label the picture “dinosaur” through brave spelling. Next, students had to write sentences using everyday words about the topic dinosaur. Students also created a dinosaur book by copying the names of specific dinosaurs from the front board. Lastly, in Mathematics, students are continuing to learn about numbers 10-30. This week students learned about ten frames and how to use them to answer math related questions. Students also learned about how to locate known and unknown numbers on a number line from zero to ten or more. Furthermore, the class learned to use numbers and pictures to describe how many objects are in a group Have a GREAT weekend! Mrs. Basham Monday, January 31st January Reading Log Due Monday, January 31st January Scholastic Book Orders Due Friday, February 18th Early Release at 11:45-SIP Day Monday, February 21st No School-Presidents Day Starting January 24th, 2011 K-3 will begin our “Star Student of the Week” display. The Friday before, a student will be picked to be the “Star Student of the Week (Students are picked in alphabetical order).” A backpack will be sent home during the weekend with the child to collect all the items mentioned below. These items must all be turned in on the following Monday. They include the sharing sack, favorite picture book, parent letter, and pictures. Looking for a fun way to practice letters and sounds? Create uppercase and lowercase letter flashcards of all the letters in the alphabet. Next mix them in a pile, give each player 5 cards, and play “Go Fish Letters.” You play the same way as the game “Go Fish.” Individuals must match an uppercase and lowercase letter together to create a match. If the partner does not have the match to the letter mentioned by the other player, they must pull the top card from the pile. Continue playing until all cards are gone. To make the game more challenging, have the child say the sound of the letters. This is a great way to practice the name and sounds of all the letters!
