Chapter 2 Drug Names and References Chapter Overview This chapter begins by defining pharmacology, which is the study of drugs, their origin, nature, properties, and effects on living organisms. Each drug can be categorized under a broad subcategory, or subcategories, called classifications. Examples of common drug classifications are provided. The chapter also reviews four specific names that can be applied to each approved drug and discusses the importance of educating patients about drug names. A drug may be referred to by terms other than its classification or name. The chapter defines various drug terms, as well as terms indicating drug actions. Not all drug references are reliable, professional, and legitimate. The Physicians’ Desk Reference (PDR) and other references are introduced. Finally, the chapter provides students with information that should be included on drug cards. Objectives 1. Define the Key Terms and Concepts 2.
