5th Grade Native American Projects Contract Due: Tuesday, November 11th Project Due: Tuesday, November 18th Choose one of the following projects to complete by the due date for a test grade. All parts of the project selected should be complete, legible, neat, and creative. Students may work on their project at home. They will be given two days in class (tentatively Friday, the 14th & Monday, the 17th) and whatever is not completed must be done at home. All materials must be supplied by the student. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Mrs. Keating. 1) Write a two-page biography or create a technology presentation (Powerpoint, Prezi, etc.) of at least 5 slides on one of the following people: Sequoya Geronimo John Ross Chief Joseph Samoset Tecumseh Squanto Pocahontas Pontiac Sitting Bull Hiawatha Sacagawea 2) Write a two-page report on a specific Native Tribe telling where they lived, what important people belonged to their tribe, what their principal crops were, and other important cultural customs such as art, music, dance, etc. 3) Research how the Navajo Indians’ language was used in World War II. Write a one-page report or create a technology presentation (Powerpoint, Prezi, etc.) of at least 3 slides and develop a code using the Navajo language. 4) Make a map of North & South America (poster board size) showing where at least 10 different Native American tribes lived. 5) Make a poster or create a technology presentation (Powerpoint, Prezi, etc.) of at least 5 slides about one specific tribe of your choice . It must include name of the tribe, type of housing, clothing, location of tribe, crops grown, weapons, pottery or jewelry made, art, dance, music and gender roles of men and women. 6) Build a miniature teepee, wigwam, chickee, longhouse, adobe pueblo, underground winter or cone shaped redwood house. Include a written explanation about which tribes used this kind of home, location and why they made it the way that they did. 7) Read the book Stone Fox, by John Reynolds Gardiner, and write a one-page summary of the story. 8) Write an ABC Book of Native American Terms. Each page must include the letter, the term with definition, and an illustration of the term. Book will be graded on content, as well as, neatness and creativity.
