Four Functions of a Computer: INPUT – computer accepts data from the user. You can provide the computer with input by keying using a keyboard, pointing and clicking a mouse, pointing a stylus, or speaking into a microphone. STORAGE: The computer saves (stores) information or instructions using: o Floppy disk, hard disk, CD/DVD-ROM, USB devices o Size of a storage device is measured in megabytes or gigabytes Bit 1 or 0 Byte Equal to one character (8 bits) Kilobyte 1000 bytes Megabyte One million bytes Gigabyte One billion bytes Terabyte One trillion bytes PROCESSING – The computer interprets and processes the data that you input. It adds, multiplies, divides, finds or manipulates data or text to complete a task you have given it. Uses CPU and RAM (holds information temporarily) OUTPUT: The computer displays or produces information that has been processed. The output might be something you see on the screen (monitor), something you hear (audio), or something you ask the computer to print (printer).
