Main purpose of the job
To plan, teach and evaluate courses that meet the learning needs of students in the
programme area.

Main activities and responsibilities
3.1
To undertake the teaching of a class or classes in the subject area, fulfilling any
syllabus and accreditation requirements.
To teach in a flexible and creative way that reflects accurately the advertised
programme and meets the overall requirements of the curriculum offer.
To work co-operatively within the programme area team.
To provide a course outline, schemes of work, lesson plans and individual project
briefs as required.
To use ILT as appropriate to facilitate learning, prepare ILT and audio-visual
equipment for classes with guidance and support from e-learning advisors.
To develop, revise and use teaching materials that derive from a global perspective
and that are relevant to a diverse student group.
To assess students’ learning during the class, give them feedback and correct
homework as required.
To take responsibility for classroom administration, e.g. take registers and check
students’ enrolment status etc.
To keep up to date with subject knowledge and other issues relevant to the area of
work.
To advise students on progression routes to other courses etc.
To carry out quality assurance procedures such as student self-assessment
(Statements of learning), course review and evaluation procedures.
To attend relevant training / development events and meetings as required.
Any other duties as appropriate to the post.
To work at all times in accordance with and to further the policies and procedures of
City Lit, including those regarding safeguarding, health & safety, equality & diversity
and customer care.

Selection criteria
Essential criteria
Up to date knowledge and evidence of at least 3 years’ professional working
experience of Art History in your specialised field.
Please indicate on your application, which course(s) you are applying to teach.
A qualification relevant to the subject(s) being taught.
A teaching qualification.
N.B. City Lit expects its teaching staff to be qualified to teach adults. We require
tutors who teach more than 50 hours a year to be qualified to City and Guilds stage
1 or Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (or equivalent). If you do
not have the appropriate qualification you should be willing to obtain it within the
timescales specified in City Lit’s Staff Development policy.
Level 2 in both Literacy and Numeracy (or equivalent)
Evidence of continuing professional development.
Experience of teaching Art History to adults of mixed ability in group settings.
Up to date knowledge and enthusiasm and interest for the subject.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Effective interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Commitment to and knowledge of quality assurance within an educational setting.

Statutory requirements
This post is designated as an associate (full if SfL or curriculum management)
teaching role for the purposes of the Further Education Teachers’ Qualifications
(England) Regulations, 2007.
The following are statutory requirements and failure to meet these within the
required timescales will result in the withdrawal of any offer of employment or
dismissal (as a result of the contravention of a statutory duty):
Prior to the commencement of any employment City Lit has a statutory duty to
verify your right to work in the United Kingdom, your identity and any qualifications
claimed in support of an application.
Membership of the Institute for Learning or Membership within 6 months of joining
City Lit. (Please provide membership number and grade).

For post-September 2007 entrants to the further education sector who work more
than 50 hours per year:
A Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) or SVUK equivalent
followed by a Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) or
SVUK equivalent.
Appointees without this level of qualification must achieve PTLLS (or equivalent)
within one year of appointment) and CTLLS (or equivalent) within five years of
appointment.
Contractual requirements
This post is subject to the successful completion of a probationary period of
employment in accordance with the probationary procedure.
Digital resources must be made available for all courses in accordance with the
digital resources strategy.
Quality assurance records must be completed and maintained in accordance with
the quality handbook.
Teaching will be observed and graded according to the observation of teaching and
learning policy; at City Lit grades 1 and 2 are the normal accepted grades; grades
3 and 4 will result in improvement strategies linked to the probation or capability
procedures.
