Pacing: These activities should be completed in 2-3 sessions. Day 1: Introduce vocabulary, background knowledge and read Day 2: Work on graphic organizer and read Day 3: Finish reading discuss organizer and assess Before Reading Vocabulary: Use the attached graphic organizer. Utilize words, content definition, and sketches to build vocabulary. Did you know that Native Americans had many different tribes? They lived differently according to their geographic location. Look at the map on page 30. Locate the 5 tribes of Hopi, Comanche, Mohican, Navajo and Mandan. Two of the tribes live near and close to Utah. Which two? Look at the Glossary. Here we see that every tribe lived in a different style home. Let’s read pgs 31 and 32. Let’s chant together. Notice that we can see the different homes. I am going to pass out a graphic organizer for you. On graphic organizer, lets fill out and match together the kinds of homes that these Native American Tribes lived in. Draw a sketch to help you remember what the home looked like.
