Dear Parents: Attached is a copy of the Academic Focus that we will be working on this week. I will send home a sheet every week to let you know what we are working on in class. On the back of the paper is a list of the goals we will also be working on this quarter. These goals are very important because they are based on the Core Curriculum Standards which your child will be graded on for the report card. You can help you child to be successful by reviewing and practicing the goals at home. Also attached is your child’s lunch number. This is a very important number. They will use this number to get their lunch, check out books and log into some computer programs. It would be very helpful if you would help your child memorize this number and practice typing it on the keypad. Thank you for your help, Academic Focus Week of: Language Arts: Math: Social Studies/Science: Reminders: Academic Focus Week of: August 24, 2015 Language Arts: We will be reading The Kissing Hand and completing several activities to go along with the book including discussing characters, setting, key details. 1. Ask your child to tell you about the story. Ask them who the main characters are (Chester, his Mom, and the teacher). Why is Chester sad? (Because he will miss his Mom while he is at school) What is a kissing hand? (a kiss to help Chester remember his Mom while he is at school) We will begin learning the Phonics Dance. This is a dance/chant that helps us learn our alphabet and letter sounds in a fun way. Math: We will be learning the Calendar routine, which we will do everyday. We will begin working on identifying numerals 0-10. We begin very slowly in order to get the students use to the routines in school. We will also be discussing how things are alike with the exception of 1 key detail (such as color, size) 2. Homework will begin coming home on Wednesday. We will have homework almost everyday in math. Most of the sheets should be an easy review of what we have covered in class and should only take 510 minutes. Social Studies/Science: We will be discussing and doing activities that focus on colors. We will also be working on cutting practice. Reminders: Until further notice, Kindergarten students will not be permitted to purchase snacks in the cafeteria. It takes us a very long time to get through the lunch line at the beginning of the year. Trying to purchase snacks really backs up the line until the kids learn the routine of the cafeteria. Thank you for understanding. Quarterly goals are on the back of this sheet. Please work with your child at home so they are able to successfully meet the goals by the deadline. Academic Goals 1. We will work on a Chester Loves book. We will then work on making a class book that goes along with our Chester Loves book. Have your child read the Chester Loves book to you when they bring it home. We will work on writing our first names the Kindergarten Way—first letter capital the rest lowercase. Have your child practice writing their name at home—homework sheet will be sent home in the packet. Math: Practicing counting to 5. This is a very simple skill for all the children, however, right now we are building activities and games that we will use throughout the year. We are starting slow so we can get really good at the activities before moving on at faster speed. Practicing sorting by shape, color, and size. Social Studies/Science: We will continue to work on colors. We are talking about primary and secondary colors and creating a book that should come home at the end of the week. We will be continuing to work on cutting skills. We will begin to work on Visual Discrimination skills. All of these skills are foundational skills that we will use to learn throughout the year. Actual Social Studies and Science will begin after we build our foundations. Homework: (All homework is due on Friday.)
