BACKGROUND: The author of Lamentations was Jeremiah, and it laments
(mourns) the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. Jeremiah was a prophet
and religious leader of the Jewish people, and he, along with many other
Jews, suffered greatly when the Babylonians destroyed their city, way of life,
and transplanted most of the population.
