Australian Animals

General:

Australia has an arresting and inimitable fauna. It is the most toxic continent and nearly the only part on earth with live marsupials. 83% of the mammals,

89% of the reptiles, 90% of the fresh-water- fish and the vermin and 93% of the amphibians only exist in Australia. The reason for that is the geographic isolation from Australia.

Marsupials:

Marsupials almost only exist in Australia. They are mammals that bear her children in a small bag.

The most famous marsupial is the kangaroo.

There exist four kangaroo species:

1. The Red Kangaroo (2 meters tall, weight 90 kg)

2. The Eastern Kangaroo (2 meters tall, weight 65 kg)

3. The Western Grey Kangaroo (80-100 cm tall, weight 28-54 kg)

4. Antilopine Kangaroo ( 1 meter tall, weight 60 kg)

Monotremes:

Australia is the home from two of the last five monotremes (duckbill and echidna). The feature of a monotreme is that it is a mammal but lays eggs.

Birds:

Australia is the home from 800 birds and 350 of that only live in Australia.

Probably 20% of the parakeets in world live in Australia.

Spiders:

Very interesting are also the spiders because they are very often very toxic.

For example the Redback- Spider. Every year probably 10,000 people are bitten.

Snakes:

Also the snakes are very toxic. 16 of the 20 most toxic snakes live in

Australia. For example the Inland- Taipan, the most toxic snake in the whole world.

The Problems caused by imported animals:

Through geographic isolation Australia has a very own fauna. If the animals from other continents come to Australia they move in the ecological niche of the Australian animals.

Since the settlement of Australia by the Europeans 20 mammalians- and 16 bird species have died and many others are endangered.
