Strong Museum of Play Superheroes/English Language Arts Curriculum Activity: Superhero/ Villain Flashcards This activity can be completed before a visit to the Strong Museum of Play Grade: Primary/Elementary Grades Time: 30-40 minutes Objectives/Goals: Students will explore the idea of heroes vs. villains. Students will demonstrate an awareness of the stereotypes that are used in comic books for superheroes and villains. Students will use their knowledge of heroes vs. villains to interact with their peers. Standards New York State English Language Arts Standards Standard I: Students will read, write, listen and speak for information and understanding. o As listeners and readers, students will collect data, facts, and ideas, discover relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and use knowledge generated from oral, written, and electronically produced texts. As speakers and writers, they will use oral and written language to acquire, interpret, apply and transmit information. Standard II: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression. o Students will read and listen to oral, written and electronically produced texts and performances, relate texts and performances to their own lives, and develop an understanding of the diverse social, historical, and cultural dimensions the texts and performances represent. As speakers and writers, students will use oral and written language for self-expression and artistic creation. The students may have extra time to fill out their worksheet. Some of the worksheet may be filled in already. Directions for the games will be given to the students. This lesson can be modified for any grade level in the primary/elementary age group. If SMART board or any other interactive technology is in the classroom, have students come up to the board and write their answers on the chart. Procedure 1. Introduce Comic Bok Heroes and Villains with this website http://marvel.com/universe/Main_Page 2. Ask students what makes a Hero or Villain? Discuss their ideas; similarities and differences between heroes and villains. Name specific super heroes and villains. 3. Use chart paper to record their ideas. Students can write down the same answers on their own worksheet. 4. Students will cut out their flashcards of heroes and villains and put them in the plastic bag. 5. Students will be able to play Super Villain (a version of Old Maid), Go Fish or Memory Concentration. 6. Teacher will model this game with another students so everyone knows how to play. Assessment Students will be assessed on their worksheet about heroes and villains. Students will also be assessed on their ability to work in small groups and express their learning and prior knowledge through one of the card games. Students will come back together and talk about what they learned during the lesson.
