Newsletter 5 2013-14
Friday 4 April 2014
Dear Parents and Friends
Reader Friendly Paper
It has been shown that print is easier to read on some off-white or tinted papers. You will find,
therefore, that, from Monday 21st April, we will be using a pale cream shade of paper for most of
our black printing. The actual shade to be used may be changed as we learn more.
Reporting to Parents

Thursday 1 May
4:00 to 6:20 pm

Lost Property
Our growing collection of unclaimed clothing, etc will be set out in the entrance area on the
evenings of the parent-teacher meetings.

Please note that, from Monday 21st April the snack money will be 50p per nursery session
(payable in advance, as usual).
Pre-school to P1 Transition
Parents of our P1s for August, 2014 should see their separate letter for full details.
Sports Relief, 2014
Between a day of dodge ball and another of sporty dressing, both organised by the Pupil Council,
a total of £505.50 was raised.
Crombie School web-site (http://www.crombie.aberdeenshire.sch.uk/)
Teddy Bears Hospital
Senior Staff Nurse Abbey Coutts and Staff Nurse Anna Clinton delivered a wonderful learning
experience for the children of Nursery , P1 and P2 when the Teddy Bear Hospital came to
Crombie School. The Teddy Bear Hospital encompasses a Teddy Bears journey from Admission to
Initial Assessment to Theatre to Recovery and Discharge. The children were very excited as they
dressed up for the Teddy Bear Hospital as doctors, nurses and paramedics and brought in a Teddy
Bear, with an injury,to be bandaged!
Euroquiz 2014 Success
The Crombie team of Harry Armishaw, Molly Fairweather, Elyssa Forbes and Yaseen Al-Obaidi
won the local heat of the annual Euroquiz and went on to be a very creditable third in the regional
final where the questions became quite obscure (The supporting adults couldn’t answer them!).
Westhill Rotary Quiz
The local Rotary quizzes were closely contested, with Crombie teams doing particularly well, including
winning the main event. Our participants were Scott Rennie, Ieuan Harries, Finlay Harcus, Timothy
Wang, Caitlin Harries, Matty Mills, Xander Beeson and James Marriner
Running
The running club for primaries 5, 6 and 7 will run on Fridays (12:30 to 1:00 pm) from Friday, 25th April.
You can find details of forthcoming Active Schools cross country events here:
http://www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/recreation/active_schools/groups/westhill.asp
Commonwealth Games Art Competition
Using the games and its 17 sports as inspiration, primary and secondary pupils were challenged
to create 6,500 pieces of artwork from across Scotland to decorate bedrooms in the athletes’
village where the athletes and officials from across the Commonwealth will stay.
The winning designs will be gifted to the visitors as a memento of their time in Scotland, and the
athletes will be encouraged to send a note expressing their personal thanks back to the young
artists.
Mrs Cooper and Mrs Weaver ran an in-school competition for primaries 4,5 and 6. The entries
were displayed in a small exhibition in school. An external visitor had the difficult task of selecting
ten of the entries to send to Glasgow.
The chosen entries were from:
Melana Louw, Mya Stephen and Jason Collie of P4BW; Max Chalmers and Unyime Usua of P4W;
Harry McCombie, Zoe Beeson and Chloe McNicol of P5/6E; and Nathan Cormack and Elly
Robertson of P6M. We hope that they are fortunate enough to receive a reply. Imagine Usain
Bolt writing to our artists!
Thanks to all the pupils who submitted an entry for making such a wonderful display and so
difficult for our guest to choose ones for Glasgow.
Fairtrade Fortnight 24 February to 9 March 2014
During Fairtrade fortnight all pupils took part in activities organised by the Fairtrade Committee like
The Banana Stacking Challenge and Do Something Crazy With a Banana. This was to raise
awareness of farmers who do not get a fair price for their goods and how Fairtrade helps farmers to
get a decent amount of money for their products. At the end of the fortnight we held a whole school
assembly where we heard what each class had been learning about Fairtrade, and shared
photographs of all the crazy things pupils had done with a banana, some of them were really crazy rounders with a banana! P1F won the Banana Stacking Challenge, well done to them. It was great
to see so many people wearing something yellow that day too.
Look out for our Fairtrade Committee members at the Spring Fayre with their Fairtrade information
stall and possibly the Banana Stacking Challenge for people who want to give it a try.

Parent Council
The next meeting will be on Monday 19 May at 7:30 pm in the school.
PTA
The next meeting will be on Tuesday 22 April, 2014 at 7:30 pm in the school.
The recent bingo night sounded like a genuine fun occasion and raised over £600. Plans are
already well advanced for the Spring Fayre on Saturday 10 May.
How to Help to Grow a Teenager
This is an opportunity to enable parents with similar age children (11 to 18 years) to support each
other and their young people. It is a free informal 6 week course from 29 May (7pm to 9pm) at
Westhill community Centre. To find out more and to book a place, please contact Ann or Lorna on
01224 740089.
Parking around the school and in the school car park
Once again we need to ask you to respect the double yellow lines and zig-zag markings. Also,
please avoid using the school car park as a drop of and pick up point for pupils. We do not want
to use janitorial time shutting and opening the gates at appropriate times to control traffic
movement.
Head Lice
The holidays provide a good opportunity to break the cycle of infestation. Please check and treat
your chidrens’ hair if necessary.
Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
Staff training is planned for next term to help us to introduce the classroom use of i-pads (part
funded by parents through the PTA).
Yours sincerely

Nursery and P1 to P3 Christmas Shows DVDs – orders at £3 each
We have found a recommended copier at a reasonable price. We will send a bulk order as soon
as we receive enough of your orders to justify one. Please indicate your requirements below. I
remind you that, although the performances were excellent, the cinematography and lighting were
a little below Hollywood standard and the DVDs reflect that.
