CHURCH OFFICE AND PETER'S PANTRY - 358-0135 FAX: 856-358-9295 Email: elmerumc@juno.com ALAN S. DARBY, PASTOR Date: MAY 2010 May our prayer as a people and a nation be heard and blessed for such a time as this. We make this plea in faith, believing in the mighty name of Jesus our Lord. Amen As your pastor, I would like to invite you to join with me in this move of God’s Spirit praying at home, at work, and at church for our nation. In His Regard, Pastor Al Dear Friends, One week from today we are invited to join with believers in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to seek Him in prayer on behalf of our great nation. The National Day of Prayer was established by our Congress as the first Thursday in May and churches of all denominations all across America are uniting in heart and mind to humble selves, seek God’s mercy and beseech Him for revival and awakening! Franklin Graham, 2010 honorary chairman of the NDOP Committee offers this prayer: Lord, We are thankful for the abundant blessings You have bestowed on America. Our forefathers looked to You as Protector, Provider, and the Promise of hope. But we have wandered far from that firm foundation. May we repent for turning our backs on Your faithfulness. We pray that this great nation will be restored by Your forgiveness. From bondage, You grant freedom Through Your own sacrifice, You offer salvation. From the state of despair, You offer peace. From the bounties of Heaven, You have blessed – not because of our goodness – but by Your grace. You have given us freedom to worship You in spirit and in truth as Your Holy Word instructs. May our lives honor You in word and deed. May our nation acknowledge that all good things come from the Father above. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed that our nation should set apart a day for national prayer to confess our sins and transgressions in sorrow, “yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon…announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.” “We have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our own hearts, that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own…we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God who made us! It behooves us then…to confess our national sins and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.” Help us to pray earnestly for our president and leaders who govern, that they will humble themselves and see Your Attendance: April 4 April 11 April 18 April 25 Stewardship: April 4 April 11 April 18 April 25 Early 40 33 29 20 Church $7,837.50 $4,289.50 $3,515,03 $4,087.50 Total monthly amount needed Total received for the month of April: Total deficit for July: Morning 251 121 141 118 Missions $695.00 $532.00 $597.80 $1,011.00 S. A colonoscopy uses a long, flexible and slender tube attached to a video camera and monitor to view your entire colon and rectum. If suspicious areas are found, your doctor can pass surgical tools through the tube to take tissue samples for analysis. Once you are diagnosed with colon cancer, your doctor will order tests to determine the extent or stage that the cancer has spread. Three treatment options are: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Bonnie Kanady, RN HEALTHCARE MINISTRIES: COLON CANCER Colon cancer is cancer of the large intestine (colon), the lower part of your digestive system. Rectal cancer is cancer of the last several inches of the colon. Together they are referred to as colorectal cancers. Most cases of colon cancer begin as small, non-cancerous clumps of cells called adenomatous polyps. Some of these polyps can become cancers. Since these polyps are small and produce few symptoms, doctors recommend regular screening tests to help prevent cancer by identifying polyps before they become cancer. Signs and Symptoms of colon cancer include: a change in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or a change in the consistency of your stool for more than a couple weeks, rectal bleeding or blood in your stool, persistent abdominal gas, cramps, or pain, a feeling your bowel doesn’t empty completely, weakness or fatigue and unexplained weight loss. If you notice any of the above symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor. Risk factors include: being older than 50, being black, having a history of cancer or polyps, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, as well as inherited syndromes and family history. If more than one family member has colon cancer, the connection may not be hereditary, but from shared exposure to an environmental carcinogen or from diet or lifestyle. Researchers have studied the effects of diets low in fiber and high in fat, also high in red meat and processed meats. If you are inactive, a smoker, obese, have diabetes, or drink alcohol, you are more likely to develop colon cancer. We have finally warmed up some here in Florida. It was even cold here. One day we counted 5 snow flurries – yes, that’s right – 5 snow flurries!! Most of the time Ron writes our prayer letters, I edit them, add some comments, then we pray over them and away they go but this month I wanted to write because of the burden on my heart that grows deeper everyday for the women of this world. God loves each and every woman. He created us all so uniquely! But unfortunately, the world over, women do not know of anyone who loves them, especially a God that loves them and cares about them. Here are a few statistics that a friend sent me. It’s astounding that this can go on in our world today. 1. There are more than 27 million refugees is the world today – 80% of them are women. 2. 20-50% of the world’s women are assaulted by their husbands. 3. Marital rape is considered to be a crime in only 17 countries. 4. Women and girls work 70% of the work hours globally and yet, they own less than 1% of global wealth, and receive only 10% of global income. 5. About 70 million women and children were victims of sex trafficking in Asia during the last 10 years. 6. The main victims of modern warfare are civilian women and children, not soldiers. 7. 70% of the work done around the world is unpaid work done by women. 8. 2/3 of the people who are unable to read and write are women (more than a billion women). 2010 has rolled in with a fury and the fury is people calling and emailing for us to train women in their areas of the world in Bible storying. With over a billion women unable to read, they need the gospel and in a way that conveys the message that God loves them so much. Six years ago I sat with a group of widows in Afghanistan who could not read or write but they had come to Christ through the Jesus film. We sat with them for 5 days and taught them Bible stories. The one thing that they didn’t understand was how much God loved them. As we taught them one women’s story after another, it started becoming clear to them that “God does love me, God understands me, God has a plan for me.” You cannot imagine their faces when they realized these truths! Because of this trip, God has placed these women on my heart with a burden and a passion to reach them. We have been working with the Jesus Film to develop stories to help with evangelism and discipleship with their new film for women; Magdalena; Released from Shame. After many, many hours we have finished the manual and are now using it in our trainings with women. In early March, I was at a Trans World Radio meeting with their women’s ministry team who has developed a women’s radio program. Their radio programs primarily address village health, child raising and themes relating to women globally, but they wanted Bible stories to go along with their programming. This will reach women in over 54 countries. Please pray with us that God will give us wisdom as we develop the stories and that they will be stories that convey God’s love for each of these women. In May, I will be going to West Africa. There we will be training about 20-30 women in Bible storying. That means 20-30 women who will learn the stories, learn how to develop their own stories and be able to train others. Please pray for this training and that many women will com to know of Jesus’ love through HIS stories. ** Would you pray with me for wisdom and strength as we grow our women’s ministry, called Story Tapestry? **Wood you pray for our women’s ministry team and all of the travel ahead of us this year? **Would you pray for our efforts of partnership with Trans World radio (TWR), the JESUS Film Project, and other ministries? **If you would like to give towards our Story Tapestry women’s ministry, you can write your check to Campus Crusade for Christ and in the memo part of the check put #2855731. PRAYER REQUESTS: Pray for the two billion unreached people who have yet to hear the gospel. Pray that our teams around the world will walk closely with the Lord Pray that those who have been trained in Bible storying will be faithful to use what they have learned. Pray for protection of our teams working in difficult areas. Pray for perseverance of new believers as they share Bible stories with others. Pray for oppressed women around the world to hear about God’s love for them Ask the Lord to provide the funding and national workers for Bible storying projects.
