Course Title: Banking and Finance 15 5081 Course Number: Banking and Finance 17 5079 Banking and Finance 19 5080 Prerequisite: None Duration: 1 semester, .5 credit, 5 meetings per week Grades: 10, 11, 12 Course Description This course introduces banking and finance principles utilized in personal and professional finance and economics. This is unique mixture of academics and “hands on” delving into the aspects of banking through a collaborative effort with Hamden High’s school bank. Group dynamics plays a large role in this class allowing stock market investments to become an everyday learning situation, including strategies, on-line simulated trading, and analyzation of portfolio holdings. Course Content Standards The following standards were taken from the National Business Education Association standards for Economics and Personal Financial education: PERSONAL FINANCE I. Personal Decision Making Achievement Standard: Use a rational decision-making process as it applies to the roles of citizens, workers, and consumers. II. Earning a Living Achievement Standard: Identify various forms of income and analyze factors that affect income as a part of the career decision-making process. III. Managing Finances and Budgeting Achievement Standard: Develop and evaluate a spending/savings plan. IV. Saving and Investing Achievement Standard: Evaluate savings and investment options to meet short and long term goals. V. Buying Goods and Services Achievement Standard: Apply a decision-making model to maximize consumer satisfaction when buying goods and services. VI. Banking Achievement Standard: Evaluate services provided by financial deposit institutions to transfer funds. VII. Using Credit Achievement Standard: Analyze factors that affect the choice of credit, the cost of credit, 2 and the legal aspects of using credit. VIII.
