Mission Statement
This School endeavours to nurture each student academically, physically, morally,
socially and emotionally and to acknowledge the commitment of students, staff and
parents in their overall contribution to the school as a community.

Coláiste Eoin, as a multidenominational school, we will provide for the religious

As an active parents’ association our association fosters co-operation between school
and home and promotes the educational welfare and the general interests of the
students eg. helping to provide educational facilities etc.

Student Council
The Student Council is made up of one student representative from each class group
in the school. The general aim of the Council is to foster a Community Spirit in the
school and represent the views of students on proposed changes/improvements to the
school Congratulations to the Student Council reps for 2010-2011. Training took
place in conjunction with Kilkenny Education Centre and the council operated well
under the guidance of M. O Keeffe. Twelve Class Representatives were elected. They
held monthly meetings in CEH and attended to their duties with great dedication.

Encompasses Enterprise Education and Preparation for the World of Work in addition
to the Leaving Certificate. The LCVP is added to the Leaving Certificate.

This course is offered to facilitate students who did not achieve their desired results in
the Leaving Certificate and who wish to make a second genuine attempt to attain their
goal.

The LCVP and TYP groups work experience took place on 26 Feb to 2 Mar.
Appropriate revisions were made to the Transition Year Programme Re: details of the
syallabi, assessment, teaching strategies etc.

Adult and Continuing Education (Day)
FETAC Accredited Courses 2010-2011 conducted in the school included Business
Studies and Computer Applications (Incl. ECDL), eBusiness Studies (Incl. ECDL),
Wood/Metal Craft and Design and Childcare. The areas of awards included Word
Processing, e Business, The Internet, Information Technology Skills, Computer
Applications, Work Experience, Information and Administration, Communications,
Desk Top Publishing, Web Authoring, Business Calculations, Caring for Children,
First Aid, Early Childhood Education, Art and Craft for Childcare, Child
development, Child Development and Play, Combined Materials, Furniture Making,
Metal craft, Computer Aided Drafting, Drawing. Total enrolments 58 students.
Adult and Continuing Education (Evening)
Childcare was conducted as an Adult Education Classes of FETAC level 5 standard.
Other courses included ICT Computers all levels, Care for the older person, Arts and
Craft for Childcare, Art, Drawing and Painting, English for Migrant workers, Tone up
and Chill out, Badminton, Budget cookery, Integrating Children with Special Needs.
Total enrolments 134 students over the two terms. During the Feb 2011 Mid Term
break the Director of Adult Education arranged for an Occupational First Aid course
for all F.Ed. students.
Extra Curricular Activities and Sport Provision
Colaiste Eoin provides facilities and activities to meet a wide range of needs and
students are encouraged to participate in individual and team games, as well as interschool events and competitions. Students’ total development is of the utmost
importance and we encourage students to get involved in activities such as Quizzes,
Debating and Public Speaking etc. Educational visits/tours are undertaken by groups
regularly
The Schools Cross country Teams participated in the local cross-country
championships, the County Sports day - CEH came third in county Carlow. Other
sports are U14, U16 and Senior Gaelic Football, U 14, U 16 and senior Hurling,
Ladies Football and U 14 U16, Ladies Camogie U14 and U16 and senior SOCCER.
Indoor Soccer and Table tennis leagues.
Education Tours and Outings: Careers RDS, Dublin, Graiguecullen retreat centre,
Gaisce at Glendalough, Theatre and art workshops, LC Geography Field trip, LCVP
Field trip and TYP’s to England.
Awards and Scholarships
The Carlow Enterprise Board ‘Student Concept’ finals were awarded at a ceremony in
the IT Carlow. Two CEH were awarded prizes for their creativity. Four Gaeltacht
Scholarships and two French Scholarships were awarded to CEH students. Past
student P.J. Byrne received the Austin Waldron award and is attending the I.T.
Carlow. A major awards event at the end of the school year Students were presented
with awards, trophies and certificates in various areas such as students of the year,
School spirit awards, sport, attendance, academic, artistic, science, TYP certification,
Home Gardens, young entrepreneurs awards, school shop, Drive for Life award,
Meitheal and Student Council certs., Bank of Ireland awards etc.
1. Teaching and Learning
Goals: To enhance the ability of all students and especially first, third and sixth years
to learn/study more effectively and reflect on the grades in the public examinations.
To increase the uptake of higher subject levels in the maximum number of subject in
the Junior and Leaving Certificate. To emphasise the importance of good attendance
and its critical impact on performance in school. To offer Music on the curriculum.
Actions: Whole Staff review of all DES and FETAC examination and assessment
grades for all students. Deputy Principal and Special Duties Teacher team developed a
study skills programmes for First year, Junior Classes and Senior Classes. Presented
the programmes to the staff and implemented with the relevant groups. Texting
Service Provided.
Outcomes: Excellent progress with the first year group and less so with the other
groups. Appointment of Music teacher to the school.
Review: The study programmes will be developed further and increased planning
time for the programmes with the whole staff will be provided out of the Croke Park
Agreement hours. The use of the class teacher and year head structure to progress the
issues eg attendance, higher level take up etc. Possible presentation of the study skills
programme to groups of parents. Use of Texting Service for absenteeism.
2. Professional Development
Goal: To provide all the necessary subject, syllabus content, methodology, personal
development and skills CPD to all staff within the resources available, identify
ongoing needs in the area and access methods to address the needs.
Action: In the Institute of technology Carlow. Subject emphasis over the entire
curriculum and organized by the Education Centres in Wexford and Kilkenny.

Monitor: All participants reported to the school staff and principal on the CPD where
relevant.
Outcomes: Specific Information and Communications Technology Skills, FETAC
course/module implementation issues and the development and Student Study skills
were identified as areas in need of development.
Review. The timing and availability of teachers for substitution were issues raised.
The training of staff by their peers and colleagues will be further developed will be
utilised more in the future as the staff felt that the expertise for the necessary training
and development is, in a lot of cases, present in the school.
3. Quality Assurance
Goal: To conduct student assessments four times during the academic year and
review student progress in a systematic method.
To maximise the achievements of the Further Education group in the FETAC
Assessments.
Actions: Oct 18-22 Class Assessments, Nov. 29– 03 Term Written Assessments
Mar 7 – 11 Class Assessments and May 30-04 Summer assessments. The Pre JC and
LC examinations were conducted from 28 Feb to 04 Mar. The practical Examinations
timetable was delivered to all relevant students. The following SEC and FETAC
Examination and were completed in CEH: The LCVP Link modules, Home
Economics, Art at LC and JC, Metalwork, Engineering, Construction Studies, Gaeilge
and French Oral examinations and all FETAC modules.
Outcomes: Excellent participation at all the assessments. The FETAC External
Examiner Centre Report was an excellent one.
Monitor: Personal interviews with all the Leaving Certificate Students by the
Priomhoide and Deputy Principal post Christmas and again post Pre LC assessments
to ascertain progress and areas to develop. All other reports monitored by class
subject, class teachers and Year Heads. Further Education Co-ordinator liaison with
all F. Ed. students.
Review: The personal interviewing process, although very time consuming, proved
very useful in terms of level selection and study planning and it is hoped to extend the
process to Junior Cert, students in due course. The Guidance Counsellor initiated the
establishment of Student Profiling for all student in the school and will continue this
into the future. DES Inspection. Subject Inspection of DCG conducted with feedback
to the Priomhoide, the teacher, the BOM and the entire staff.
Whole School Evaluation - Management Leading Learning (WSE-MLL). questions
to be addressed by the BOM during the new form WSE and in considering the
planning issues for CEH in the future. This should help to form the basis for planning
and implementing the needs of the school into the future.
4. Supporting Structure and infrastructure.
Goal: Enhance, integrate and ensure openness in the communications process
between the stakeholders in the school community. Make available all the ICT
facilities necessary to ensure the Teaching and Learning process is improved.
Actions: Student Council, one student representative from each class group in the
school. Twelve Class Representatives were elected.
Meitheal Leaders, youth leadership training programme for the Leaving Certificate
students of the school led by an Assistant Principal teacher. Meitheal attended for
training and on their return to school, they met with the First Year Class on their first
day in Post Primary school. The group meet with First Years on a regular basis over
the year and met as a group, at lunchtime once a month.
Rainbows Programme: This peer-support group is aimed at people who have suffered
a significant loss in their lives, either by death, separation or divorce or any painful
transition
Learning Support/ Reasonable Accommodations: Extra help was provided for
students, who through assessment were found to have learning difficulties, our
remedial programmes were designed to improve the student’s confidence and selfimage and have proved to be most successful. SEC Reasonable Accommodation
2011. CEH was been granted nine special centres, six for Junior Cert. students and
three for Leaving Cert. Students. Two main centers were in operation also. Project
and Practical work was also assessed in separate centres with exam aide Ms. Liz
Farrell officiating for CEH.
Outcomes. Student Council presented issues of concern to the BOM.
Data projection equipment, laptops and PCs were provided to the staff and school and
the ICT provision in the school updated in its entirety. A new CEH WEB site is being
developed in close collaboration with the school staff. The plan is to have the new
site operational for the new academic year 2011-2012. Successful Summer works
programme application for the replacement of roof lights and in Prefabricated
Buildings the fitting of Upvc windows.
Monitor. Regular and ongoing consultations between the P/DP and the relevant post
of responsibility holders, support teachers, the parents council, the student council and
the BOM. P/DP liaison with staff Re: the ICT facilities to be provided.
Review: A serious challenge for the future will be the diminution in the post of
responsibility positions in the school.
5. Partnership and Linkages
Goal: To continue to build and sustain relationships with the local community. To
Enhance the relationship with the National Schools in general and in particular the
feedback and information on students transferring to CEH from the schools. To
preserve and enhance the Work Experience pool of available placements.
Actions: Hacketstown National School GAA Coaching with N. S. Students and
participation in the After School Homework Club in the N.S. Hacketstown Day Care
Centre TYP Student Participation. Closer systematic liaison by the Guidance
Counsellor with the national schools.
Community Activities. The PE sports hall in CEH was available to the community for
sporting activities. Hurling, Soccer, Gaelic football and Badminton use the PE hall.
Access to CEH Playing Fields/ Pitches. Hacketstown Community Games used the
sports field facilities for training and events. Hacketstown Tinahely Credit Union.
Outcomes: We enhanced/built communications and expanded the database of Work
Experience placements in the region. We have initiated the process of building a
database of all incoming students and their profiles in conjunction with their national
school principals.
Monitor. On going scheduled meetings with the TYP, LCVP and F.Ed. co-ordinators
and the Guidance Counsellors.
Review: A serious challenge for the future will be the diminution in the post of
responsibility positions in the school.
6. Growth and Development
Goal: Maintain student services in the school in the light of the education cuts
especially in the areas such as supports and attendance. Enhance the Further
Education provision in the school.
Actions: Student Services: Education Outings. Theatre, Business, Technology,
Geography, Library, County Sports, Visiting Speakers. History, Politics, Religion,
Careers, Business, Home Economics, Breakfast Club/School Shop, Gaisce Awards.
Transition Year Programme and Fifth years, Charity Fund Raising, Higher Options
Coneference, Career Guidance Presentations, Scoliosis Screening, Diphtheria and
Tetanus, Mumps all with the HSE, Comhairle na nOg, Drive for Life Programme, The
Debs Ball, Religious Education, Retreats, Choir, Religious Ceremonies, School
Insurance scheme, French Theatre, School Book Rental Scheme, GPA Indoor
facilities Table tennis, Pool and Table Football, Work Experience TYP and LCVP,
F.Ed., Gaeilge and European Language College scholarships, Fitness Testing
Programme, Student Personal Development Programmes, Debating and Public
Speaking. New ICT Provision in all rooms.
Refit made to all computer facilities in the school with upgrades in the computer
rooms and the PCs in general rooms and offices. Sporting Equipment additions.
Outcomes: Increased number of students in the areas of Craft and Childcare in the F.
Ed. Provision. Retention rates high.
Monitor: Middle Management Meetings Assistant Principal meetings with Principal
and Deputy Principal each fortnight, Special Duties Teachers Meetings with Principal
and Deputy Principal at the start of each term, All Post of responsibility holders report
to all staff meetings as required.
Review: Reorganisation of the posts of responsibility tasks in the school with
emphasis on the priority areas. Croke Park hours agreement may help.
