MACROECOLOGIST WALLINGFORD The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), is the UK’s Centre of Excellence for research in the terrestrial and freshwater environmental sciences. We are looking for a Senior Scientist with expertise in macroecology to further develop our research in this critically important discipline. The post holder will be analyzing large-scale, long term biological and environmental data sets to: describe and explain temporal and spatial patterns of biological abundance, diversity and distribution, link these to drivers of environmental change, including climate, land use change, and biological invasions, quantify and predict the implications of changing species distributions for population processes, ecosystem function and conservation biology, attract research funding and build collaborative links with UK and European research partners The successful candidate will have an excellent track record in personal research in macroecology or a related area. You will have the ability to review critically large-scale spatial datasets to identify both their research potential and their limitations. You must have skills in spatial and/or temporal modelling approaches in order to: describe and explain temporal and spatial patterns of biological abundance diversity and distribution, link these to drivers of environmental change, including climate, land use change, and biological invasions, quantify and predict the implications of changing species distributions for population processes, ecosystem function and conservation biology. Experience of phylogenetic techniques to further test these ecological questions would also be an advantage. You will be required to network with research scientists form other Institutes and Universities across Europe, building partnerships and developing research proposals. You will be expected to attract research funding and manage large, multi-partner projects. You will have the ability to produce high impact papers and present results at international conferences. You should be a good collaborator, as you will work closely with PhD students and other staff. A PhD degree and preferably 3 years postdoctoral research experience is an advantage. The salary for this post is £29,360 progressing to £34,630 per annum. In addition NERC offer a pension scheme, 30 days’ annual leave and 10½ days’ public and privilege holiday per annum. Closing date for receipt of applications is 30 July 2007.
