In lieu of a final test on The Outsiders, you will need to choose ONE of the following projects to display your knowledge and understanding of the novel.
Option #1: Imagine a film production of the novel set in the year 2014. You are the director…where would you set the novel to make the themes and conflicts most poignant for today’s audiences? Which actors would you cast for each of the main characters? How would you promote the movie? For this project, create a movie poster for your film that displays some or all of your choices. Additionally, submit a written explanation of your choices, including the setting/backdrop and your casting choices for all major roles.
Option #2: Create a CD soundtrack for a film version of this novel. Pick five songs that illustrate three characters, one conflict (external or internal), and one setting for the story. Burn the CD, create a simple CD cover, and submit them along with liner notes that are at least a one paragraph written explanation for each of your song choices.
Option #3: Rewrite a scene from the novel from a different point of view. For instance, you might re-tell the scene where Bob is killed from the perspective of Randy or you might re-tell the fire in the church from the perspective of Dallas. Work hard toward giving voice to the point of view you’ve chosen. Minimum writing requirement: Three pages, double-spaced.
Option #4: Many would argue that “gang” conflicts like the one created by Hinton haven’t changed much in recent times. Do some research about contemporary gangs and draw parallels to the two sets of groups. Create a poster or other visual that illustrates the similarities and differences between contemporary gangs and those described in the novel.
Option #5: Be an actor yourself! Grab some friends and dramatize 4 critical scenes from the book, including some of the rising and falling action, and the climax. Think about how simple costumes or props might heighten your portrayal of the action.
Your production may be videotaped at home and shown to the class, or simply presented to the class on the due date.
