Lesson plan and summary of the teaching material Subject: Level: Appraisee: Duration: Topic: Objectives: Biology F.7S YU 1 Period (40 mins.) Menstrual cycle To understand the definition of menstrual, its process & its hormonal control. Prior Knowledge: 1. The sexual reproduction of human beings 2.The structure & function of male & female reproductive system. 3.The formation of male & female gametes. Scheme of Work: Duration 5 mins. 5 mins. Content A. Introduction & recapitulation from previous lesson: B. Definition of menstrual cycle. Teacher’s Activities Questioning Students’ Activities Answering Explanation Individual thinking & personal experience sharing Knowledge construction 10 mins. C. The Phases of menstrual cycle. 1. Menstrual phase 2. Follicular phase 3. Luteal phase Elaboration 10 mins. D. The hormonal control of menstrual cycle. Elaboration 10 mins. E. Construction of concept map on the hormonal control of menstrual cycle Instruction Knowledge construction & integration Concept map construction & presentation Reflective Statements: ﹙Fill in this section within 3 working days after lesson observation and give it to observers.﹚ 1. AV and IT materials were used to let students experience a world beyond the school and give visual realizations of abstract ideas and concepts. 2. To maximize learning effectiveness, both the learning contexts and inquiry activities were built upon the existing knowledge, ideas and experience of the students. 3. There were group discussions to allow students to be actively engages in their learning process, to motivate learning and to develop generic skills such as collaboration, communication, critical thinking and problem-solving. 4. Teacher’s oral questioning and students’ response provided clues to their strengths, weaknesses, misunderstanding and level of understanding. 5. Time was allowed for students to respond and a variety of acceptable responses were also allowed. 6. Time used by the students to fill in boxes about the mechanism of menstrual cycle was more than the teacher’s expectation, it made the lesson run in a slower pace. a. The teacher decided not to finish the lesson plan. b. The schedule was changed to ask the student to read information about the 3rd phase – luteal phase and construct the concept map about hormonal control of the menstrual cycle by themselves, and present it in the next lesson – a practice for implementation of life-long learning. Please refer to the concept sent from the students. c. Concept mapping is an effective way of allowing students to think and actively make sense of what they have learned, linking up related concepts. This provides challenging learning experiences to stretch their science capabilities and offer opportunities for them to reach the fullest potential. It allows students to work at their own pace and gives them to pursue creative activities in biology.
