Misunderstandings often result from unclear expectations

Misunderstandings often result from unclear expectations. Let me be very clear as
to what I expect from you:
COME TO CLASS PREPARED, BE PUNCTUAL AND PARTICIPATORY IN CLASS
What does it mean to come prepared for class?
 Read chapters in advance
 Answer the Review Questions as preparation for exams
 Ask questions for clarification in class, via e-mail, and/or during office
hours.
What does it mean to be punctual to class?
 Attendance is only taken once per class. If you are not here when I take
attendance, you will be marked absent.
 Lateness is a sign that you think your time is more valuable than your
instructor’s and your classmates’. This is not so.
 Assignments all have due dates. Even if you are not here, your assignment
should be. Late assignments will not be given full credit. Full credit will
only be given to students who submit their assignments on time.
 Let me know in advance if you are going to be absent. You should do this in
writing (via e-mail).
 If you are unexpectedly absent, you are to contact me immediately in writing
(via e-mail) explaining the cause of your absence. You should also contact
your work group members to find out what you missed in class.
What does it mean to be participatory in class?
 Class attendance and participation are worth 10% of your final grade in the
course. Ask questions, answer questions, volunteer for class participation.
This will be seen favorably by your professor.
 If you do not participate in class, it may be seen unfavorably by your
professor.
It is the student’s responsibility to
 Submit work on time
 Come prepared to class
 Provide evidence of learning through the material submitted, your class
participation, and your performance on exams.
YOUR PREPARATION (OR LACK THEREOF) IS NOT
YOUR INSTRUCTOR’S RESPONSIBILITY. IT IS YOURS.
The grade you earn in this course transfers to a four-year state university.
Therefore, you are expected to do college-level work.
Formulas for Success
 Reading chapters in advance
 Answering the Review Questions before Exams
 Ask questions in class
 Ask questions during office hours
 Ask questions via e-mail
 Use the resources available to you
Pitfalls of Success
 Lack of preparation
 Not allocating adequate preparation time
 Lack of sleep
 Procrastinating
 Overextending yourself
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE (OR HOUR OR DAY)
TO LEARN THE COURSE MATERIAL.
THIS IS NOT A FORMULA FOR SUCCESS IN ANY COURSE
You should view each class as a business meeting. There is an objective which
needs to be completed at each meeting. Your professor is the facilitator of learning
during the meeting.
On the textbook
The authors of your textbook know much more about Economics than I do. You
bought the book, now read it! Do not come to me for help if you have not made an
attempt to read, review, and learn the material on your own.
Extra Credit
 Should any additional extra credit be available, it will be made available to
ALL students, not on an individual basis.
 Do not approach your professor for individual extra credit assignments.
This would be unfair to other students. There will not be any exceptions.
