This is going to all of Troop 243 and is the troop’s Monday email for 5-21-12. This Wednesday’s meeting is a Court of Honor. Moms bring your advancement ribbons if your scout is advancing! Tiki is the service patrol. 1) Summer Camp; 2) St. Pius’ Parish Picnic Parking; 3) Rifle Merit Badge Course; 4) Flower Issue; 5) Service Opportunity; 6) Troop Roster; 7) Flag Placement for Memorial Day; 8) Flags 4 Vets 1) Summer camp will be here in a few weeks. All campers and adults attending summer camp must have a parts A, B and C forms and a copy of medical cards on file with the troop. Part C requires a medical professional signature including Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner or MD. Please provide me 2 copies of everything so we will have a copy to keep and a copy to send on trips. You must also sign the Troop’s 2012 Code of Conduct form, which is also required before you attend NYLT. All forms are on the troop web site. 2) This is a reminder to sign up with Todd Early to support the St. Pius Parish Picnic. This is a nice opportunity to pick up service hours. He will begin to ask for volunteers to signup for shifts this week. You can contact Mr. Early at todd.early@insightbb.com or 550-1349. Whenever you do service hours, let me know so I can track them for you in Troopmaster. This does not replace our parking support of our sponsoring parish, St. Barnabas in July. Everyone will be asked to help and support St. Barnabas at that time. 3) The Shooting Sports Committee will offer a special class on Saturday, June 2, for those Scouts signed up for the rifle merit badge class at Boy Scout Summer Camp. This is a class that will cover some of the basic requirements for the merit badge so that Scouts will be able to spend more class time shooting on the range during Summer Camp. This will hopefully give Scouts a better opportunity to meet all of the Rifle Merit Badge requirements while they are at summer camp. There will be two sessions of the class offered on Saturday, June 2. The first session will be from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. EST and the 2nd Session will be 1:00pm - 3:00p.m. EST. This class is not required for Scouts to take the Rifle Merit Badge Class at Boy Scout Summer Camp, but hopefully it will give them advanced preparation to complete the class at Summer Camp. Anyone interested in taking the class should sign up soon as there will be a limited number of spots in the classes. There is no fee to take the class. If you are interested in the class, contact: Larry Arnold - 502-361-2624 or 1-877-334-2674 or larry.arnold@scouting.org 4) The nursery that supplies our flowers, Deibel’s Greenhouses in Pewee Valley, has informed us that there is an air/water borne mildew disease that has spread to Kentucky and across the country in the past several weeks. This mildew attacks simple impatiens, but not other flowers. We are pro-actively emailing (or sending a postcard) to all customers who purchased simple impatiens from Troop 243 this year. If any of your customers has noticed a problem with their impatiens, they can take the email or postcard to the nursery to receive replacement plants at no cost. This disease does not affect other plants such as double impatiens so it is safe to plant other flowers in the same soil. 5) Doug Davis from River City Canoe & Kayak is requesting our help on Monday, May 28 from 9-1 at the Mayor's Hike, Bike & Paddle, transporting kayaks for the senior ladies of the club. Troop 243 agreed to provide assistance as a way to thank Mr. Davis for taking his time to come talk to us about Canoeing. We will meet under I64 at E. Witherspoon and River Road from where we will carry the Kayaks. We will be carrying kayaks from the parking lot to the dock. This will fulfill service hour requirements. If you participate in this please let me know so I can enter your service hours in Troopmaster. Please come out to help and maybe thank him one more time for helping Troop 243. 6) Attached to this email is a troop roster. Please look it over and let me know if there are any corrections. If there are corrections, I will send out a correction next Monday. 7) It is a Troop 243 tradition that we place flags in the National Cemetery located next to Cave Hill Cemetery. Once again this year we will meet at 9:00 at the cemetery on Saturday May 26th (or before if you want to be able to park close) to get organized. Come in either entrance and ask the guard where to go. The Baxter Ave/ Broadway entrance is likely the easiest. 8) Flags4Vets is looking for some scouts to hand out flag stickers at the entrances to Churchill Downs on May 26, 27 and 28. You should arrive no later than 11:00 and expect to wrap up at 1:00. You will receive a voucher for lunch and free admission. Reservations are required. Contact Fred Moore at 502931-0374 or moore@theusflag.com. First call first accepted. If you participate in this please let me know so I can enter your service hours in Troopmaster. Please reply to this email if you would like to be removed from this email list.
