CHOIR COMMUNITY SUMMER SPECIAL #3
FOR THE GHC, HNC, SOUNDINGS & CCLT CHOIR COMMUNITY
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>><><><>
ADMIN SUBMISSIONS
HOSTS NEEDED FOR
COMMUNITY CHOIR LEADERSHIP TRAINING PARTICIPANTS
It's that time again when I am looking for friendly homes for our 2015 CCLT participants while they are here in Victoria. If
you feel you might have the space and the inclination to host one (or perhaps two) people, we (Shivon, Denis and I) would
be most appreciative.
As you may know we now have 40 choirs across North America who are doing the work of building community through
singing. This year we have people coming from many places including, BC, Quebec, Ontario, Washington, California,
Colorado, Indiana, and New York.
The dates for this session
Session - Sunday, September 27 through Sunday, October 11, 2015
Arrival time for most participants will be Saturday, Sept 26 - Departure time for all participants will be Sunday October 11.
We then make the appropriate assignment based on such details as allergies, ground transportation, etc. and have the
individual(s) contact you directly to complete the process.
Here's some additional information on hosting CCLT participants:
The criteria to be a host includes:
Providing a spare room.
Providing kitchen access - this could mean sharing your meals or having your guest do their own cooking in your
kitchen- the participant(s) will cover their own food costs either way.
Providing bathroom access.
Living somewhere near the Church of Truth in James Bay, or within 25 - 30 minutes driving time.
The benefits are:
Getting to meet and know someone from another place in North America and beyond - who has started, or wants
to start, a choir based on the Gettin' Higher Choir model.
Participating in a few social events - pot-lucks, parties with lots of singing, etc. with the participants and other
hosts.
Helping to spread the joy of singing in community.
Check out the program at www.communitychoirleadership.com
Please get back to me by email gloria@gettinhigherchoir.com or phone at 250-995-8731. I can discuss the details and
answer any questions you may have.
Much thanks in advance.
Gloria Hansen, Registrar, CCLT

A MONDAY NIGHT APPRECIATION
Thank you to the Monday night GHC choir who helped the Cycle of Hope raise $8,573.40 in recyclable bottles. This is an
amazing total and will go towards our $50,000 goal this year.
We had to change the ride due to low funds this year but this meant that we included 2 rides each 130 km starting in
Victoria and travelling though Duncan and another around Victoria and the Peninsula to Metchosin.
Please check out our website to see how the ride went…http://www.CycleOfHope.ca

DEAR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS OF INSTRUMENTS4AFRICA,
We hope you are having a nice summer!
We are writing to you today to let you know that we received some bad news regarding our project in Mali. It is the rainy
season at the moment and we found out just over a week ago that the roof of our brand new paillotte had collapsed!
Fortunately nobody was inside when it happened. It appears that some of the wood that was used was not strong enough
to hold the weight of the straw roof.
The paillotte has become a very important space for our dance and tutoring programs at the Togola Centre in Bamako.
We feel it is vital that the roof be rebuilt as soon as possible to avoid further damage and to make the paillotte operational
again.
We would like to rebuild the roof using a metal structure as opposed to a wooden one to insure that it will be long lasting.
The total cost would be over $2 000. We have $1 000 in our ICO account and we have taken a loan for $1000 that we
hope can be repaid as quickly as possible. Also the money that is in the ICO account was earmarked for the running of
the programs at the paillotte and now is being used to repair the damage so we will need to recoup that amount as well.
Any financial support that you could offer at this time would very much appreciated. You can donate through Innovative
Communities.Org. Instruments4africa is part of ICO.
To donate and receive a receipt for income tax purpose, please go to: www.innovativecommunities.org. Click on donating,
follow the link and choose Instruments4africa as the initiative you are supporting.
Please pass this info along to your friends and through you social media. Thank you so much.
Take care,

CELEBRATION OF LOCAL ORCAS, AND
AN INFORMATION OUTREACH FOR LOLITA
(the orca from L pod now in Miami Seaquarium)
Sat. August 22nd ~ 11 am - 3 pm.
To be held at the Oak Bay Art Project's OUTDOOR PIANO at CATTLE POINT (near the boat ramp)
Singing, letters & petitions, displays by whale folk and artists
Help mind an information table. Bring picnics and binoculars -- beautiful setting. Might even see whales offshore!
Participants would be whale-lovers, as it is a voluntary not paid event. We organizers thought it would be fun to make use
of Oak Bay's Art Tour piano, but none of us has any musical abilities. So we're looking for folks who do -- please pass this
on to any individual members of your group who might be interested. They can play/sing anything they want, but we're
also writing "whale lyrics" to go with popular tunes, Beatles etc., and we need accompaniment.

BROADMEAD LODGE VOLUNTEER POSITION AVAILABLE
Broadmead Care Society is recruiting for a special music-based volunteer. The position is with a Music and Memory
program. This program brings individualized music to our residents (average age 89). Volunteers share listening to the
residents’ favourite songs using headphones and an iPod. Music is one of the last remaining memory centers that
someone with dementia loses, and sharing music with residents with dementia has had some exciting and wonderful
effects.
The position is posted here: Volunteer Victoria’s volunteer database under Broadmead Care and online applications can
be taken here: http://broadmeadcare.com/volunteers/how-you-can-help
This sounds like a wonderful opportunity

HELLO LOVELY VICTORIA FOLKS,
I'm looking to move back to Victoria from Salt Spring in Sept. and am looking for a beautiful, sunny, centrally located place
to call home. I need 2 bdrms (or 1 with a den) for a maximum of $1400 all incl.
I would also consider sharing a house with a compatible person who also leads a healthy, spiritually orientated lifestyle.
We could look for a house together or I would be open to sharing your house.
Lastly, I am open to buying a condo or house if the location and price are right.
I'm a retired RMT and Pilates instructor with no pets and a regular income from investments. I'm a Master Gardener so a
place with a garden would be a huge bonus!
The house I sold on SS closes Sept. 18 but I would be willing to move earlier.
Please contact me if you're interested or happen to know of anything. Any leads would be very much appreciated.
All the best,
Lorraine

LOVELY CAT LOOKING FOR LOVELY HOME
A beautiful Himalayan cat is looking for a loving forever home, preferably one where he would be the only cat and
definitely no dogs. He is about 5 years old, and checked out healthy at the vets. He has been a stray for several months
so will take a little time to acclimatize to being inside. He is staying with Natalie who runs Dees orphan kitten fund which
rescues kittens born to feral mothers in the saanich area. www.deesorphans.com.
Natalie's email: nkroschi@shaw.ca telephone: 250 896 5771.
Natalie also arranged the vet care for this cat and will continue to take care of him until he is found a loving home. Thank
you for listening. I hope that we can find a home for "mr. Frou frou" soon.

A book recommendation
THE HUMAN AGE: THE WORLD SHAPED BY US
A very interesting, informative and enjoyable read about a time in the history of earth that is increasingly being referred to
in scientific circles as the Anthropocene…The Human Age
Author Diane Ackerman is an excellent writer with a quirky sense of humor. She covers the good, the bad, the ugly and
the beautiful of our impact on our planetary home with a mixture of equally heartfelt hope and concern.
Among other things the New York Times had this to say about her and her book…
The Anthropocene — the Human Age — provides Diane Ackerman with the subject for her 24th and most
ambitious book. Ackerman has established herself over the past quarter of a century as one of our most
adventurous, charismatic and engrossing public science writers. Since her 1990 breakout title, “A Natural History
of the Senses,” she has demonstrated a rare versatility, a contagious curiosity and a gift for painting quick,
memorable tableaus drawn from research across a panoply of disciplines. “The Human Age” displays all these
alluring qualities, as Ackerman delves into fields as diverse as evolutionary robotics, urban design,
nanotechnology, 3-D printing and biomimicry. The book simultaneously raises unanswered questions about the
politics and ethics of the Anthropocene idea.
Recommended highly by Bill Hanson GHC Bass etc.

SACRED WALKING AND WRITING GROUPS
with Junie Swadron
(Aug 23 & 30 + Sept 6, 13, etc.)
What’s it about?
It’s walking to enjoy and observe our world. It’s writing to share from our hearts, it’s laughter, it’s friendship. It’s learning to
stop judging our work, it’s sipping tea. It’s finding our voice and feeling safe to speak our words out loud. It’s about being
authentic and kind. It’s about music and moving our bodies during the break. It’s about creativity and it’s about catharsis –
allowing the writing to become our wise teacher. It’s poetry and it’s prose. Short stories and drawings that we write from.
It’s different every time!

FORGIVENESS WORKSHOP
(Sep 26)
When was the last time you felt a deep sense of happiness, joy, freedom, or gratitude? If you can’t remember, you may be
holding onto resentments. Every resentment, whether you are aware of it or not, is holding you back from finding the right
career and living the life you love.
In this workshop you will become aware of the resentments you are holding, get in touch with your natural longing for
forgiveness and find the courage within yourself to forgive. You will learn how to forgive quickly and with ease, so that you
can experience the transformational power of forgiveness.
