Who is eligible for Social Security Number (SSN)? When can you apply for SSN?
Social Security numbers are generally assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States.
As an F-1 student, you are eligible to apply for SSN, provided you have an on-campus paid job. (Example:
Graduate Assistantship, Student Worker). Students who receive Tuition Scholarships are not eligible to
apply, since they do not get paid. In order to obtain a SSN, students must be in the United States for at least
10 days before applying and be registered full-time for classes. For more information, contact our office.
