The Index is laid out in two Sections as follows:
SECTION I - Subject Index
Subjects have been classified under twelve main headings, viz. Badges; Bands; Buttons; Colours; Formation Signs; Headdress; Marches,
Ballads, Songs & Tunes; Medals & Decorations; Military Museums; Shoulder Titles; Uniform; Weapons. Those remaining unclassified
have been inserted alphabetically as far as possible according to subject.
SECTION 11 - Regimental Index
As with the last Index, Section II is presented in strictly alphabetical or numerical sequence rather than, as with earlier editions, being
divided into Regular Regiments, Disbanded Regiments, Militia, Yeomanry, Volunteers, Territorial, Overseas, Naval, Air Force, Police and
Miscellaneous.
Where a bare reference is not explicit an explanation has been added in parentheses. The number of the appropriate Volume is in Roman
and that of the page in Arabic figures. An asterisk indicates an illustration.
