To: From: Date: Subject: OAL Policy Committee Michael L. Moore, Jr., Commissioner, Oakland Section/OAL October 14, 2009 for Policy Committee determination on 11/18/09 Proposed revision of OAL702E. OAL Basketball Play-Offs The following revision of OAL702E – OAL Basketball Play-Offs, is proposed with two primary purposes: 1. Create a more cost effective OAL event; and 2. Involve two additional OAL schools. OAL702E. OAL Basketball Play-Offs 1. Five teams in the final league standings of both OAL Men’s & Women’s Divisions shall qualify for the OAL Play-Offs to determine their respective league and Oakland Section Champion. The first place team in the final league standings earns “two points,” which provides a “bye” in the play-offs’ first and second round. The seeding formula for the first-round games are as follows for teams finishing in second through fifth place: The second place team plays at home against the fifth place team; and the third place team plays at home against the fourth place team. The following formula will be applied to the second-round of the play-offs: Both the winner of the second place versus fifth place game, as well as the winner of the third place versus the fourth place team will advance to the second-round to face each other. The higher seed will host the game at their home site. The Oakland Section Men’s & Women’s Championships between the first place team who earned “two points” (thus receiving two byes in the first two rounds) and the winner of the second-round will play against each other on a neutral court. The following is an example of the OAL Basketball Play-Off formula: First-Round Play-Off Games – Formula Example First Place Team: Won 9, Lost 1 = Bye Second Place Team: Won 8, Lost 2 = Home Game & defeats Fifth Place Team: Won 4, Lost 6 Third Place Team: Won 7, Lost 3 = Home Game & loses to Fourth Place Team: Won 5, Lost 5 Second-Round Play-Off Games First Place Team = Bye Second Place Team plays at home & defeats the lowest seeded, Fourth Place Team. Oakland Section Championship: The Second Place Team plays against the First Place Team at a neutral site to be determined by the OAL Policy Committee and the OAL Commissioner. Previously explained formula example; now shown below in a simpler form. First-Round Play-Off Games – Formula Example #1 seed has a bye #2 seed vs. #5 seed @ #2 seeds’ home site: #2 seed wins. #3 seed vs. #4 seed @ #3 seeds’ home site: #4 seed wins. Second-Round Play-Off Games #1 seed has another bye #2 seed vs. #4 seed @ #2 seeds’ home site: #2 seed wins. Oakland Section Championship Game #1 seed vs. #2 seed @ neutral site in a one-game championship, “winner takes all” and no double-elimination, if the #1 seed is defeated.
