World Cup of Geography The World Cup of Geography is a team competition that will be held throughout the year as we study geography. Here is how it works. Your class will be divided into teams that will compete against each other on geography quizzes, with the winner of each match up being determined by the higher average quiz score. Please note that not only will the results affect your team, they will affect your grade. Although the average scores determine the outcomes for the competition, your individual scores go into the teacher’s grade book and will affect your average in social studies. Individual scores are kept private by the teacher. A schedule of map activities can be found on the following pages. Your responsibilities include carefully labeling each map when we get to it, which is usually done in class but possibly for homework from time to time (occasionally the maps will be collected and graded). Then, you are to study to prepare for the quiz on it. You have teammates that are relying on you, so make sure to pull your weight. If you are absent on the day of a quiz, please come to school at 7:30 the following morning to make it up. More on how the competition works-teams will not be made until after the first few map quizzes – those will count only towards your individual grade -there will not be a map activity every week – the maps and map quizzes will be spread out throughout the year – some units will have more maps than others (Africa is a busy unit for map quizzes) – and the final exam for geography (also the World Cup Final) will be at the end of the school year -teams will use soccer scoring for the records (3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, zero points for a loss) -the top two teams from each class period will advance to the elimination stage Teams and scheduleGroup A Millichap’s Period 2 Brazil Group B Millichap’s Period 3 Australia Group C Millichap’s Period 6 Colombia Cameroon Chile Greece Croatia Netherlands Spain Ivory Coast Japan Mexico Group D Millichap’s Period 8 Costa Rica England Group E Ciferni’s Period 2 Ecuador Group F Ciferni’s Period 3 Argentina Group G Ciferni’s Period 6 Germany Group H Ciferni’s Period 8 Algeria France Ghana Belgium Italy Honduras Bosnia / Herzegovina Iran Portugal Russia Uruguay Switzerland Nigeria United States South Korea Game 1 – All African countries Brazil vs Croatia Mexico vs Cameroon Spain vs Netherlands Chile vs Australia Ivory Coast vs Japan Colombia vs Greece England vs Italy Costa Rica vs Uruguay Switzerland vs Ecuador France vs Honduras Argentina vs Bosnia / Herzegovina Iran vs Nigeria Ghana vs United States Germany vs Portugal Belgium vs Algeria Russia vs South Korea Game 2 – African physical features Brazil vs Mexico Cameroon vs Croatia Spain vs Chile Australia vs Netherlands Japan vs Greece Ivory Coast vs Colombia Uruguay vs England Italy vs Costa Rica Switzerland vs France Honduras vs Ecuador Argentina vs Iran Nigeria vs Bosnia / Herzegovina Germany vs Ghana United States vs Portugal Belgium vs Russia Algeria vs South Korea Game 3 – Middle East Brazil vs Cameroon Croatia vs Mexico Spain vs Australia Chile vs Netherlands Colombia vs Japan Greece vs Ivory Coast England vs Costa Rica Uruguay vs Italy Switzerland vs Honduras France vs Ecuador Bosnia / Herzegovina vs Iran Argentina vs Nigeria Ghana vs Portugal Germany vs United States Belgium vs South Korea Algeria vs Russia Game 4 – The Indian Subcontinent Re-matches of game 1 Game 5 – Western Europe Re-matches of game 2 Game 6 – Eastern Europe Re-matches of game 3 ******************************************************************* Start of elimination stage – not all teams advance – all students take quizzes regardless of team’s record Elimination stage – first round – China - cities and physical features Game 1 - Group A first place vs. Group B second place Game 2 – Group C first place vs. Group D second place Game 3 – Group B first place vs. Group A second place Game 4 – Group D first place vs. Group C second place Game 5 – Group E first place vs. Group F second place Game 6 – Group G first place vs. Group H second place Game 7 – Group F first place vs. Group E second place Game 8 – Group H first place vs. Group G second place Quarterfinals – Central and East Asia Game 1 winner vs. Game 2 winner Game 3 winner vs. Game 4 winner Game 5 winner vs. Game 6 winner Game 7 winner vs. Game 8 winner Semifinals – Japan chap teams play each other Two remaining Ciferni teams play each other World Cup Final - Geography Final Winners of Semifinals
