World Cup of Geography The World Cup of Geography is a team competition that will be held throughout the year as we study geography. Here is how it works. Your class will be divided into teams that will compete against each other on geography quizzes, with the winner of each match up being determined by the higher average quiz score. Please note that not only will the results affect your team, they will affect your grade. Although the average scores determine the outcomes for the competition, your individual scores go into the teacher’s grade book and will affect your average in social studies. Individual scores are kept private by the teacher. A schedule of map activities can be found on the following pages. Your responsibilities include carefully labeling each map when we get to it, which is usually done in class but possibly for homework from time to time (occasionally the maps will be collected and graded). Then, you are to study to prepare for the quiz on it. You have teammates that are relying on you, so make sure to pull your weight. If you are absent on the day of a quiz, please come to school at 7:30 the following morning to make it up. More on how the competition works-you will take a pre-test (not graded) in the first few days of school to help us make the teams -there will not be a map activity every week – the maps and map quizzes will be spread out throughout the year – some units will have more maps than others (Africa is a busy unit for map quizzes) – and the final exam for geography (also the World Cup Final) will be at the end of the school year -teams will use soccer scoring for the records (3 points for a win, 1 point for a tie, zero points for a loss) -the top two teams from each class period will advance to the elimination round Teams and scheduleGroup A Millichap’s Period 2 France Mexico Group B Millichap’s Period 3 Argentina Greece Group C Millichap’s Period 6 Algeria England Group D Millichap’s Period 8 Australia Germany Group E Ciferni’s Period 2 Cameroon Denmark South Africa Uruguay Nigeria Slovenia Ghana Japan South Korea USA Serbia Netherlands Group F Ciferni’s Period 3 Italy New Zealand Paraguay Slovakia Group G Ciferni’s Period 6 Brazil Ivory Coast North Korea Portugal Group H Ciferni’s Period 8 Chile Honduras Spain Switzerland Map 1 – Continents, Oceans and major geographical features (playing teams in own class period) France vs. Mexico South Africa vs. Uruguay Argentina vs. Greece Nigeria vs. South Korea Algeria vs. England Slovenia vs. USA Australia vs. Germany Ghana vs. Serbia Cameroon vs. Denmark Japan vs. Netherlands Italy vs. New Zealand Paraguay vs. Slovakia Brazil vs. Ivory Coast North Korea vs. Portugal Chile vs. Honduras Spain vs. Switzerland Map 2 – Indian Subcontinent (playing teams in own class period) France vs. South Africa Mexico vs. Uruguay Argentina vs. Nigeria Greece vs. South Korea Algeria vs. Slovenia England vs. USA Australia vs. Ghana Germany vs. Serbia Cameroon vs. Japan Denmark vs. Netherlands Italy vs. Paraguay New Zealand vs. Slovakia Brazil vs. North Korea Ivory Coast vs. Portugal Chile vs. Spain Honduras vs. Switzerland Map 3 – Western Europe Map (playing teams in own class period) France vs. Uruguay Mexico vs. South Africa Argentina vs. South Korea Greece vs. Nigeria Algeria vs. USA England vs. Slovenia Australia vs. Serbia Germany vs. Ghana Cameroon vs. Netherlands Denmark vs. Japan Italy vs. Slovakia New Zealand vs. Paraguay Brazil vs. Portugal Ivory Coast vs. North Korea Chile vs. Switzerland Honduras vs. Spain Map 4 – Middle East (vs. team from different period) Playing team across from you on chart – Millichap period 2 vs. Millichap period 3 Millichap period 6 vs. Millichap period 8 Ciferni period 2 vs. Ciferni period 3 Ciferni period 6 vs. Ciferni period 8 Map 5 – Africa physical features (vs. team from different period) Playing team across from you on chart – Millichap period 2 vs. Millichap period 6 Millichap period 3 vs. Millichap period 8 Ciferni period 2 vs. Ciferni period 6 Ciferni period 3 vs. Ciferni period 8 Map 6 – African countries – set 1 (vs. team from different period) Playing team across from you on chart – Millichap period 2 vs. Millichap period 8 Millichap period 3 vs. Millichap period 6 Ciferni period 2 vs. Ciferni period 8 Ciferni period 3 vs. Ciferni period 6 Map 7 – African countries – set 2 (Millichap teams vs. Ciferni teams) Playing team across from you on chart – Millichap period 2 vs. Ciferni period 2 Millichap period 3 vs. Ciferni period 3 Millichap period 6 vs. Ciferni period 6 Millichap period 8 vs. Ciferni period 8 Map 8 – African countries – set 3 (Millichap teams vs. Ciferni teams) Playing team across from you on chart – Millichap period 2 vs. Ciferni period 3 Millichap period 3 vs. Ciferni period 8 Millichap period 6 vs. Ciferni period 2 Millichap period 8 vs. Ciferni period 6 Map 9 – African countries – set 4 (playing teams in own class period) Re-matches of game one Map 10 – All African countries (playing teams in own class period) Re-matches of game two Map 11 – Eastern Europe Map (playing teams in own class period) Re-matches of game three ******************************************************************* Start of elimination round – not all teams advance – all students take quizzes regardless of team’s record Map 12 – China -
