Use of the VET Assessment Record Book
This book is a permanent record of a student's VET activities and achievements in casual
and part time employment during the course.
It is:

a guide for the student and the VET teacher to the training and experience that should
occur both on- and off-the job

required for Certification purposes; and

part of the assessment processes for the Year 12 Certificate to be issued by the ACT
Board of Senior Secondary Studies.
How to use the VET Assessment Record Book
The VET teacher and workplace supervisor will complete the appropriate details about the
VET evidence presented for assessment by the student. The signing of learning outcomes
can take place at any time. The achievement of learning outcomes is guided by the
achievement of their respective performance criteria, and their “signing off” must be
carried out after negotiation between the VET teacher and the workplace supervisor.
It is a requirement and the responsibility of both student and the VET teacher to ensure
that this book is accurate and is kept up-to-date.
SAFE KEEPING OF THIS BOOK IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT.


IT IS A STUDENT’S FUTURE
IT CANNOT BE REPLACED
This VET Assessment Record Book needs to be completed before a Certificate can be
awarded.

Applying for Structured Workplace Learning Placements
Structured workplace learning placements have been set up to provide on the job training within
the field of Business Services. They provide an opportunity to gain experience and demonstrate
competence in specific business skills that you don’t undertake in your casual/part time
employment. In order that the experience can be as positive as possible, you should ensure that
you prepare well for the work placement by:

ensuring that you are work ready

notifying your VET teacher early of your interest in participating in structured workplace
learning

thinking carefully about the kind of workplace that would suit you best

discussing with your VET teacher as to the type of placement that best suits your needs

contacting your “employer” well before your placement

ensuring that all paper work associated with your placement is completed ahead of time as
your placement needs to be endorsed with union approval and this takes time.
Am I Work Ready?
The world of work is VERY different to going to school. Before you begin a placement, you should
speak with your VET teacher about your work readiness. Signs that you are work ready include:

you have a sufficient amount of skills so that you can fit into a Business Services environment
easily

you have completed all personal details in this training book

you realise how important it is to have a mature attitude to work

you understand the need to contact people if something goes wrong or if you are having
difficulties throughout the placement

you understand your rights and responsibilities in a Business Services environment

you have a proactive attitude towards your involvement in the world of work.
Who do I Contact?
Firstly you should speak with your VET teacher.
Once you have been given a placement, you should make personal contact by phone with your
“employer” at least two weeks before the commencement date. At this time discuss the nature of
your placement, hours you will be working and dress standards. In many cases, you will be
required to attend an interview with the employer to discuss the details outlined above.
After the placement you should write a card or letter of thanks to the employer. See sample letter
provided.
