CATALOG DESCRIPTION

Exploration of philosophical viewpoints underlying a recreation program; cr iteria for evaluating the s recreational potential of a community; administrative problems related to park and recreation programs. Prerequisite: Twelve semester hours of recreation class credit or permission of instructor.

Articulate a topic relative to the field of recreation in a written format.

Interpret legal obligations and requirements in the administration of leisure service agencies.

Create and administer a risk appraisal instrument and analyze results in order recommend changes.

III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

1. Exams (150 points total) - There will be three exams given at approximately five-week intervals.

Exams will cover assigned textbook readings, supplemental readings assigned by the instructor, and material covered in lecture. Each exam is worth 50 points.

Quizzes (50 points total) - There will be five quizzes given during the semester. Quizzes will cover material from the text and assigned for that class period. Each quiz is worth 10 points. Quizzes missed due to an unexcused absence cannot be made up.

3. Writing Skills (30 points total) - There will be three writing skill assignments during the semester.

Writing skill assignments will be in the form of letters, memos, and news releases based on hypothetical situations an administrator, manager, or supervisor would likely encounter. Each writing skill assignment is worth 10 points. Assignments will be evaluated on composition, completeness of thought and professionalism. Writing skill assignments will not be accepted late unless with an excused absence.

*4. Issues Paper (70 points) - Each student will be assigned an issue currently affecting the profession.

This paper will be submitted in duplicate (one for portfolio). Topics will include certification, accreditation, tourism, violence, substance abuse, video games, computers, aging, leisure-based business, use of open space, environmental impact, gender, safety concerns, management issues, sexuality, and private vs. public. The paper will be a minimum of 5 typed pages, contain references and be presented to the class . The instructor will provide more specific information for the assignment.

5. Attendance (50 points) - If you are going to miss a text or quiz, contact your instructor before the day of exam. No make-up options will be extended to the student who contacts the instructor the day of the exam or after. Unannounced quizzes cannot be made-up. No unexcused absences = 50 points. Absences will be considered excused with the provision of a proper dean’s excuse or prior

V. consultation with instructor and will be treated individually. For each unexcused absence, 10 points will be deducted.

6. Excused absences - Illness, death of an immediate family member, or other emergency will be considered an excused absence. Other situations will be considered on an individual basis if the following conditions are met.

A. Notification must be given to the instructor prior to the beginning of class. A voice mail message may be left on the office phone number listed.

When requested, proper documentation must be submitted to the instructor.

7. Three Written Assignments (60 points) – One assignment will cover ethics, one job descriptions and another will address advocacy.

8. Risk Management report (25 points) – Each student will evaluate a direct leadership situation utilizing the checklist provided by the instructor. A summary report will address the activity, participants, and staff involved.

9. Chapter questions (55 points) – Each student will answer questions related to the assigned chapter.

Questions can be found at the end of the chapter. Each group of questions is worth 5 points.

IV. GRADING (Tentative) Based on 90%, 80%, etc.

414 - 460 = A

368 - 413 = B

322 - 367 = C

276 - 321 = D

Below 275 = F

EVALUATION

All student assignments will be evaluated on content, depth of analysis, accuracy, composition, and professionalism.
