1 new profile is added (ES26). The data are imported from the profile Je-2 (Eutric Fluvisol) in the
MEAS_PROF (measured profile data base).
COUNTRY:
The abbreviation of Spain in the EST_PROF (SPADE) is SP. This is incorrect, since the
abbreviation in the SGDBE is ES. The country code is corrected to “ES”.
SOIL: The soils are reported according to the CEC85. Generally the classification of the soils fit
well with the data given in the EST_HOR:
The following soil type names should be corrected or reconsidered:
1
Profile ES13 (158): The profile has the soil type name “Aog” (orthic?-gleyic Acrisol). This soil
type does not exist (CEC, 1985). Since the soil unit “gleyic” is before “orthic” in the classification
key the soil should be classified as “Ag” (gleyic Acrisol). If changed to Ag the soil type can be
linked to SMU 340256 (with the dominant STU 340841).
Profile ES15 (160): The profile has the soil type name “Lck” (calcic- Chromo Luvisol???). This
soil type does not exist (CEC, 1985). The soil name should most likely have been “Lkc” (ChromiCalcic-Luvisol). If the soil type named is changed, then it would match soil type names of two
SMUs (340249 & 340252) with the dominant STUs 340819 & 340826.
Profile ES24 (169): The profile has the soil type “Th” (Humic-Andosol). The name of the soil type
in the measured profile database (MEAS_PROF), from where the data to the profile are taken, is
named “To” (Ochric Andosol). If the soil type named is changed, then it would match the soil type
name of SMU 340206 with the dominant STU 340685.
SOIL90: No data
TEXT1:
Some of the surface horizons are classified incorrectly. This means that the values in the “TEXT1”
(dominant surface texture class) field might be incorrect. The classification of dominant surface
texture class can be derived from the following table:

Revised legend for dominant surface textural class (Spaargaren, Breuning-Madsen.& Koue,
communication 2007).
The profiles listed below do not have the correct “dominant surface textural class” when the data in
the EST_HOR are examined (after being corrected so that the sum of the texture classes is 100%).
The texture classes of the surface-horizons in the EST_HOR are therefore corrected as follows.
“Orange and turquoise highlights shows the actual corrections carried out”. The orange corrections
mean that the dominant surface textural class originally given is maintained while the turquoise
hightlights mean that corrections where carried out in order to change the dominant surface textural
class.
2
The corrections mean the following:
Colour
Type of Changes/corrections
In EST_PROF: Value added (There were no value before). The
value is calculated on the basis of data in EST_HOR.dbf
In EST_HOR: The sum of the values did not add up to 100%
Corrections had to be carried out in EST_HOR.dbf. in order to
qualify for the originally given dominant surface textural class.
The dominant surface textural class is changed because the data
in EST_HOR do not support the given dominant surface
textural class.
Both the dominant surface textural class and the data in
EST_HOR are altered in order to qualify for a “new” dominant
surface textural class that can be linked to the soil map.

Generally the textures needed very small adjustments to fit into the correct texture classes. In
general the values were adjusted as little as possible and only to the nearest border of the correct
texture class.
Organic soils:
Profile 159: Has the soil type Od-9 (Dystric Histosol with “9”= meaning no mineral texture).
However the SMU 340257 with the dominant STU 340843 has the soil type Od-0 (“0”= meaning
no information).
The most correct would be to alter the texture code of the STU and SMU in the SGDBE to “9”, but
since this probably would be more confusing to make corrections in this database also, the dominant
textural class for profile ES14 (159) is suggested to be changed to “0”.
SMU: no data
STU: no data
Groundwater levels: 13 profiles (ES4, ES6, ES8, ES9, ES11, ES12, ES15, ES20, ES21, ES22,
ES23, ES24 & ES25 (149, 151, 153, 154, 156, 157, 160, 165, 166, 167, 168, 169 and 170) lack
indication of groundwater levels.
Root depths: The information on root depths of various crops is very sparse with only very limited
data available (8 profiles on total root depth of Alfalfa)
