Unit 4 Vocabulary (part 2) 1. Erosion-when wind and water move soil and sediment from one place to another 2. Weathering-the breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces, can be physical or chemical. 3. Deposition- the process by which water, ice, wind and gravity deposit eroded sediments in new locations 4. Eco Region –an area defined by its environmental conditions such as climate, landforms and soil characteristics 5. Pollution-The contaminated air, water, or soil by substances that are harmful to living organisms 6. Water shed- the area of land where all of the water that is under it or drains off of it goes into the same place 7. Aquifer-an underground layer of permeable rock (gravel, sand, silt, or clay) from which groundwater can be usefully extracted using water well. 8. Groundwater-Water beneath the earth's surface, often between soil and rock that supply wells and springs. 9. Topography-A description of land surface area with reference to elevation variations. 10. Sediment-Earth material that is broken down by processes of weathering; can be eroded and deposited by the agents of water, wind, ice, and gravity.
