COURSE OUTLINE
Course Description :
Biology 12 is a course that deals with the following areas of biology: Cellular compounds and
processes, and human anatomy and physiology. Students will develop an interest in the human
body as well as gain an understanding and appreciation of the integrated systems of the human
body. To be successful in this course, regular review and study is required.
Course Outcomes:
The learning outcomes of Biology 12 follow a sequence from cell structure and simple
biochemistry through to human organ systems. The learning outcomes are divided into 3
curriculum organizers:
1. Cell Biology (Cell structure, cell compounds, biological molecules and DNA)
2. Cell Processes and Applications (Protein synthesis, Cancer, transport across cell
membranes, enzymes)
3. Human Biology (Anatomy and Physiology of the Digestive system, circulation and
blood, heart structure and function, respiratory systems, nervous systems – neurons,
impulse generation & reflex arcs, divisions of the nervous system and the brain,
urinary system and reproductive system)
Course Syllabus:
Along with this course outline you will receive a copy of the BC Ministry of Education Learning
Outcomes. You will be expected to keep up with reading as we go and I suggest reading ahead
before we review topics in class. Bring your text to each class.
Evaluation :
The following is a break down of how your school mark will be determined:
Tests and Quizzes
Labs, Assignments, Homework
Total

-
80%
20%
100%
Each term will be given equal weighting
The two terms will make up 100% of your school based mark.
Course Expectations:
1.
Homework (to be checked)
 All homework assignments are due at the beginning of class of the due date.
 Late homework will not be accepted unless it is the result of a legitimate,
unavoidable absence that explained via a phone message from a parent.
2. Lab Work and Assignments
 This course is very demanding, and due to the time constraints only a small
number of labs and assignments are performed during the year. These
assignments will be collected in and will be evaluated using a criterion
referenced marking system.
 Late labs and assignments will be docked 15% and must be handed in by the
beginning of next day’s class (the first class following the actual due date).
As these assignments will be marked, returned and answer keyed by then.
3. Tests and Quizzes
 You can expect many quizzes and tests . . . you will be given plenty of
advance notice for major tests, however, you can expect small quizzes with
little or no warning in an effort to get you keep up with the learning
outcomes.
 If you miss a quiz or test for any reason, it will be entirely your responsibility
to be ready to write a revised test at a set date. Despite writing the test, you
will be issued a mark of zero until your absence checks out as being
legitimately excused. IF YOU SKIP AN EXAM OR CHEAT YOU WILL
RECEIVE A MARK OF ZERO FOR THAT TEST !
Attendance and Lates:
The school’s attendance policy will be strictly followed; you need to arrive to class on time,
truancy will not be accepted. Biology 12 is a difficult course that covers a great deal of
information in detail; your attendance is necessary for success. If you skip a class or neglect an
assignment; take your lumps and get on with it. Steady attendance and work ethic will
guarantee that you reach your full potential.
I encourage you to be proactive if you are absent . . . find out what was covered from me or other
students, have your parent/guardian phone the office to excuse you in the system. Pretending or
assuming nothing happened while you were away will ultimately hurt your mark.
Resources:
Your resources for this course are your textbook (Mader – Inquiry in Life), your class notes, the
BC education website (www.bced.gov.bc.ca) and me. Please use them all. I would also
recommend challenging yourself throughout each term by writing practice exam questions based
from a suitable study guide; “Practice Provincial Biology Workbook” or “The Key”.
If you are having difficulty with portions of the course I am around for help. If your struggles are
more serious I would recommend that you seek the help of a private tutor. Whether you write
the June Provincial or not, all students will write at least two practice provincials that will
collectively make up 45% of your Term Four mark.
Good luck and enjoy the class!
