Content and Objective:
This course provides an overview of key general management issues as applied to purchasing activities and
purchasing’s role in the organization. It covers topics including an overview of strategic planning and
budgeting processes, and presents specific issues related to effectively recruiting, managing, and retaining
good employees. It discusses the role of operating policies and procedures, tools to manage workflow, and
performance monitoring, and closes with a presentation of how to effectively present purchasing performance
results within the organization.
Those who would benefit from this course are individuals seeking to achieve a better understanding of the
field of purchasing and supply management, and those individuals who are seeking to attain Certified
Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) status.
Prerequisite:
Experience in the field of purchasing and supply management is useful but not mandatory for successful
course completion. Service in the field is required, however, for achievement of the designation of Certified
Purchasing Manager (C.P.M.) through the Institute of Supply Management (ISM).

Grades will be determined by:
1. Your class participation is valued at (10) points per night for a total of (100) points. No class
participation points are earned on quiz nights. If you are unable to attend class because of sickness or
work conflicts, you must advise me in writing by the next class.
2. Your active participation in each case is worth up to (50) points for a total of (100) points.
3. A series of (2) quizzes will be given, (1) on each of the two segments in the Study Guide and
associated text and other reading assignments. Each quiz will be worth (50) points for a total of (100)
points.
On this basis, you can earn (300) points. The breakdown is as follows:
